i had this problem a few days ago and searched for an answer and found it... but
-----------------
Go to the game directory and navigate to the EXE folder. In there find the file fldirectip and open it. This will open the direct connect panel.
Type in the following
IP: 67.173.27.173
Port: 2302
Select add server.
--------------------
This doesnt work again, it worked the first time and i was able to play again then now i got the same problem again so i tryed the above again and went to the server list and let it load but it fails to connect to the global server as it did before...
any other methods that might help me out so that i can play again? i tryed re-installing when it first happend and that didnt work so that idea is ruled out...
any one with any ideas on how to fix this? someone must have some theory... as i think its IP based, or some small Address file broke...

Nevermind i got it working
EDIT: i Dont have it Working... forget that i had there "i got it working" as its not working *sighs*
so i though i might give it a go so i re-installed FL, i knew i wouldnt help and i was right but seeing as a friend, (well not really a friend but does count) though to try it any then started to try and work out anything that might help me fix this... we got nothing... didnt get very far really...
so does anyone have ANYTHING that could help (i shout cos anything that i havnt tryed that might do something to help is important enough) or any answers like things to try... cos this is kinda getting annoying now... :/
Ok global server is not working since a couple years, M$ is not supporting such old game like FL that brings them almost zero revenues nowadays, different mods made their workarounds you might check www.flserver.de and use the workaround there if you want to play vanilla.
If you want to play Discovery use this: http://discoverygc.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=70974

Well global server is not the normal global server (old one govedo)
But to explain some what that server does.. its like a torrent it gives info on ip adresses with ports where you can login (in this case the freelancer servers) as its a gun server (how its called) to activate this:
(strongly not recommend to do!! as it slows the game down this was the reason why cannon did remove it)
- Make sure Freelancer is NOT running.
- open discovery installation map/EXE/freelancer.ini
- search for : ;hostname = gun.fllistserver.com
- remove the " ; " in the front
- Save and exit
- Start freelancer and it is working

its not the vanilla im after as i play and have/was playing discovery with others but for some odd reason i just couldnt 'load' up an server, it would just sit there at the server list saying "connecting to Global Server" for hours and do nothing, normally it would be like 5 seconds and with one click on the discovery server im in, i have been looking at ways to work around this problem so i can play again and i got nothing, the first solution i found when this first happen worked, but then 2 days after it happened again and i couldnt connect to "global server", i have tryed installing Discovery again and that does nothing... so its point less for me to reinstall it again as the last 4 times yield the same result "nothing"...
Download Discovery Launchpad and add in the command lines:
-s78.46.88.87 -s78.46.88.89
Also you can do short-cut and do the same thing, the server works for me without them as well, also note to re-install freelancer and discovery not only the mod.

i hardly find this use full as i have never used the program so I don't know what the hell im doing exactly, and following a walk though about using the program I found here: http://discoveryfluk.com/forums/index.php?topic=4117.0
isn't any help as i cant even set the program up, that being "importing Accounts", I only say because to me it looks like that stuff is needed for this thing to work properly how ever that maybe, and that's a no can do on importing, should i appear stubborn, arrogant or something like that its purely because i don't go about downloading programs for games that just automatically work for me...
