So I have done all of the above, minus the radeon thing, cause yeah.....Just not strong enough to run FL for now, or till i get a better rig. Thanks for the tips guys.

Fresh install - but did you also fully reinstall Freelancer, or are you using the game's data folder from a backup? It looks to me like the Freelancer fonts aren't installed on the system you are using. Look in the Support folder of the Freelancer install CD, you'll find a few font files. Install them, and try again.

When i said fresh instal, I meant of everything. I used my FL disc to do the instal, then I did the Disco mod. Just tried the font instals, worked for a minute, then dropped. Just going to wait till I can by a new laptop. Thanks for the help guys, I'm sure all the info's you posted here will help some one.
used to happen on my old netbook using an intel gma950 (or 945, not sure) on-board graphics chip. new drivers didnt work, so i installed some really old ones and they happened to take care of the problem.
if you have intel gma i suggest toying around with various drivers, old and new. worked for me. also 3danalyze is a good tool to get a better output from old intel gma chips and more control in the process.
