What your server runs on, win/linux? If win, your provider got no even manually-inputted free rules?

So... enlighten me... how has an attack that hinders server lag become an attack that takes the server out for such a long period? From what I've read here, the DDOS manages to slow things down, but to break the server? I am a troglodyte of programming, so be kind with your explanations
Basically, DDoS is powerful enough to occupy all the bandwith \ CPU, so no one can connect to it. If no one can connect then it's pointless to hold it up till attack ends %) like that. Dunno why admins are so sure about "couple of days" though.

It's more a matter of having the server pulled down manually so that preventative measures can be put in place. We thought our host might do more for us, but they haven't, so while Cannon sorts out something which should help to prevent future attacks, we've put the thing down. Although over the past week, there had been a number of attacks which pretty well nearly saturated the connection, they were so short and intermittent that overall performance didn't take a huge hit.
Starting last night, the length of the attacks grew significantly, and so the game was pretty well unreachable as it was. So, the server was manually pulled. We'd rather pull service and work things out more quickly than have poor service, lots of complaints, and slower response.
Cannon's the only one who can accurately estimate how long things will take to come back up, but we're most likely looking at a day or two, and that does appear realistic. But we have to get some form of protection sorted out because, if we don't, we'll just go right back to being attacked.
Fortunately, the forums are much more easy to protect than the game server. Now would be a good time to work on some forum roleplay or story development. Those of you who've tried out pieces of the Nomad/Order/Core trio, we'd love to hear your accounts and suggestions. And, of course, there's the old dox standby, Alien Swarm. We'll just have to ask you to be patient, and we'll let everyone know as soon as the server's back up and playable. </PR>
