I'm with Oorn on this
It's lack of any kind of enforcement of the now very lonely and ignored Rule 0.0
That's why RPers have fled in droves - they came here to play WITH each other, and had to contend with people who would rather play AT each other - and an admin staff that couldn't choose one over the other.
That's why I left twice - for a year each time.
If the needle keeps edging over the wrong way, this could be the last of it for me.
And I ain't alone.
So yeah, RP - and/or the lack of it - will most likely be the life or death of Disco.
Not new updates, not character wipes, not free credits, not PoBs or other add-ons that you can find executed much better on other games, not nuthin' but good old-fashioned aRPeee

I pay attention, always, types of players. As of the two days I have been online 85% of my encounters have been new players. How I can tell? They're all asking me questions.
What I believe that the core veteran groups are not playing. The girth of our pop is based on 1+3 year players. Less 4-7 year players. But our 1 - 3 years have been less than usual.
I remember in 484 the lowest I'd see is 50, 485, 45, 486? 33 players.
Is there a correlation? I believe from 485 on there has been such a dramatic change in how this server responds to its casual based players that it has made it harder to learn the curve of the game. NOT as nearly as terrible as the Star Wars mod or Crossfire, but enough to dampen new players.
Think you're all too paranoid and doing a self fulfilling prophecy.

Wiping the characters doesn't just mean everyone starts again, it also gives the dev team a chance rework Disco entirely, removing excess systems in particular. In fact the dev team could remake Sirius into something new and refreshing instead of the same old cluttered star map we use now.
In my opinion, having a completely new Disco would be a far better way to bring in new players and possibly re-interest some of the old, I dare say the chance to work on a blank slate may rekindle the creative flame of players, dev team and modellers/skinners alike.

IE: Mass hysteria. Stop it.
Really? Id say the server has been made progressively easier for new players since 5. We've removed dumb rules like the fleeing rule. We've removed complicated forum stuff like the tech chart, we've simplified other rules, we've added /restarts ect...

Perhaps most new people are just not able to play ? I can't ;
I started with the discovery RP mod about a week ago. About 2 days ago I got auto-banned for unknown reasons. I was just trading and mining, that is all. Even though I get a new IP from my ISP every 24 hours (the lease expires) 'my account' is still banned'. My name did not show up in this forum (sanctions) : http://discoverygc.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?fid=43
I didn't get any response. I don't know how to continue. I joined this game with 2 other friends. I wonder how long they will keep playing without me. We did trades between LD14 (mox) and Battleship Yukon, LA (synth) .. I myself tried to mine some helium and one time helped a guy to mine Silver Ore.
I didn't cheat, didn't modify files, didn't hack, didn't attack people, didn't kill, I am sci-fi fan. My friend got a Firefly ship, I was filled with joy and also wanted the ship (it proves to be a good one too, reading all the data). Yet the "system" decided to kick me and ban me.
We might have made it easier than ever for new players rules-wise, but I think as a community we're too abrasive (yes, more than ever) and we lose a considerable amount of new players that way. I mean new players can't even ask what ship is good without getting the g'damn "REMEMBER THIS IS RP SERVER RPRPRRPRPRPRPRPRRPRPRP" stuck down their throat. We should relax more as a community and show a bit more confidence and trust in one another, even towards new players.
While everyone will site their favorite reason for why the Server and "community" is going to hell, the real main reason is that people simply got bored of Discovery Mod's content.
Then there's the fact that people and groups of people here (including me, of course, I'm no exception) are constantly working on making others leave. The [LN], Torpedos, reavers & want to make indy LN leave (and pretty much anyone who doesnt do as they tell them), Order| & co want to make ZA and TCG leave, Dab, Zelot, and liberty-conspiracy wanted to make CR leave, and I want to make hypocritical assholes who think that being hypcritical assholes requires special intelligence leave (or make them stop behaving liek hypocritical assholes if not for others sake then for their own sake).
That's my favorite reason I'd like to site, but the real reason is that people are even more bored with 4.86 than they were with 4.85.
I also think that a Server wipe would be a good idea, especially if taking away and deleting certain models/ships/concepts that people now own would help balance the mod in the next version better.
I also think the "community" would benefit if some vets learn how it feels like to be noobs again.
