I ran FL from a vista laptop fine with avast, even though i couldn't play due to artifacts.
That's funny because in order to finally get the ball rolling online wise I had to remove Avast 4.7 from my machine. Nothing else that I tried (including uninstalling ZoneAlarm) worked. I'm using Vista 32bit Home Prem. Otherwise Avast was very good and I have it on laptop. TrendMicro has won quite a few prices so has Panda which has been topping charts. They are quite light on system resources wise so try those out.
But getting a firewall besides Vista's own is a very good idea. The default firewall is very user friendly meaning that it's not very good and totally omits Microsoft's own programs.
I agree with idavid about Norton being hard to remove. Use the Norton removal tool. I struggled one whole day removing Norton before they had that tool available and I had try and guess the right sequence in which to remove all 3 Norton related programs. Norton is like a nosy relative who moves to live into your house and won't leave.
Does Norton stop FL from working, even on XP??? No one answered my question really.

I'm going to switch to Kaspersky as soon as possible... even if Norton looks hard to remove, I'll find a way. So, you should see me in space in a couple of days, maybe a week. Thanks for your help. :)
It didn't take so long since I downloaded a test version of Kaspersky, I'm going to buy it later. Freelancer should now be running correctly.
But I have a little problem; I'm not able to activate the mod... Here is the error message:
Quote:Error: FLMM has determined that 'Discovery Mod v4.84' won't properly activate.
Error: Unable to find section '[Costume]'(...) in 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer Discovery\data\characters\costumes.ini'
I guess you are all going to tell me I have to uninstall and then install back both Freelancer and FLMM, but I did! I did it three times and I even changed the directory. But I still have the same problem, I'm working on it since... more than three hours and I'm getting desperate.
Please help me, I used to be able to fix this bug by myself because it happens quite often with FLMM but actually, I can't, I need help!
By the way I'm using FLMM v1.31, do you think getting a later (or older) version could help? Or is there a way to load a mod without using FLMM?
I was so close from playing...:(
Thanks in advance...
i had that once before... type in freelancer in the search box when you hit the start button, delete every file regarding it... if that doesn't work then... dunno
Stay with 1.31. There is a glitch in 1.4 keeping some mod activated even after they have been deactivated.
Dunno why Vista is doing that but I had the same problem when I was trying to activate the FL mod on my friend's Laptop. It was saying,
Error: FLMM has determined that 'Discovery Mod v4.84' won't properly activate.
''File may be corupt or stuff missing...''
I have a stupid Idea, dunno if it could work, But you install FL+Mod on a computer that can activate it, Then you copy all the files(FL+mod files) and replace the ones you have on your Vista computer. Anyone know if this work?

On my second PC that I have, it dosn't have internet connection, so I transfered disco up to it using a memory stick, when I tried to activate it using FLMM, the same error message appeared, I just went to 'Tools' and clicked on 'Restore backups' (Ctrl + R) and it worked fine afterwards, activated and played.

Not that so stupid. I tried and it worked perfectly. Thanks to all of you.
Well... never mind.
I'm not going to tell it works until I'm really able to connect to server...
I still have the same problem, I uninstalled all Norton's product with the removal tool, I shut down Kaspersky, Windows' firewall, Windows Defender and I opened ports 2300 to 2400 but I still have the message telling the connection couldn't be established...
