Ideas like removing armor and buffing hull points, nerfing of civilian ships and so on aren't impossible feats, so I think your defense is unwarranted, Spud. I'd agree if people were asking for the introduction of new ship classes or features that require a lot of work, but really most of the suggestions in this thread are pretty simple and straightforward.
I also do think it is very constructive to discuss your likes and dislikes in the mod. The OP even invited people to disagree and debate; I think that is highly constructive - as opposed to saying "critique is bad" and shutting the discussion down.
Regarding ship loss and new players, how about a 100% insurance on newbie ships; i.e. the dingiest fighters, transports and freighters? I die a lot more often now than when I was a new player anyways, I don't think it will be a real issue.
pro
- players do not rush into a deadly combat mindlessly but actually consider the value of their virtual life more
- players also consider a retreat more than fighting endlessly to the death vs. an almost equal opponent.
- if done right - ships gain an additional component ... maintenance
con
- players might kill just to make the other player pay up - which is fair enough, but there might be even more motivation to just go for the pvp, especially vs. opponents that are weaker
- it may not promote RP trading, but might turn trading into even more a chore for many ppl
- players cannot really practice anymore - unless they only go for "first blood" instead of a more realistic kill. - not sure if it can be coded that certain systems are excluded from a death penalty or same ID vs. same ID
- if done wrong - some ships may have an unproportional repair cost despite not being "better" in pvp at all
the above assumes that a ship is - for example - respawned with ( to pick a random number ) 20% item condition instead of the current 100% - which would include any death, suicide, planetdive, collision, etc.
Let us not forget that since our ships are specialized against others, it would not be hard to sacrifice around 200mil to make a bomber squad and potentially wreck a few billion in capital ships. I would seriously suggest against implementing death penalties.
Look at the Torpedoes and imagine what would have happened if that was in effect.

Things that are wrong with mod? Some dev decisions, in my POV, are very wrong (and I blame Blodo). But there is little I can do with someone's state of mind. It's clear that we have just different ideological approach on the gameplay.
Ye also wanted to add that despite all the criticism as of late, the fact of the matter is that we are a lot of people spending our time playing the game, reading the forum and posting; and we wouldn't do that if we didn't share a fundamental love for Discovery.
So despite the possible shortcomings, this mod is really a huge achievement and that's important to keep in mind.
Good things;
Discovery Freelancer, best game ever.
nothing more to say about it just;
Discovery Freelancer
Bad things;
Not enough playes
Bugs IoI: tractor beem, TL bug
Also LAG, impossible to fight when more than two ships are fighting in last few days .

f. i hate the fact that there is no dynamic economy, and the missions are base/ships/assassin/capture/kill the nanobots
Really simple, cool and correct.
Kudos for it
