You may or may not have noticed, but after the "We can say..." I quoted from him he wasn't talking about ship names anymore, instead started brainstorming about possible IMG origins while the faction has it's own lore already. That happened like three posts above yours.
EDIT: Furthermore it also doesn't really require a lot of detective skills to notice that ships under the 'DISCOVERY' folder aren't sorted by nationalities, rather by ship types in a few cases, but mostly by players/community members. Turkish was one of them too.
And old ship names don't usually change for practical reasons, for example simply looking into the 'battleships' folder you can find names like "bsgalactica", "corona", "procurator", "recusant", "venator".
Yeah but I DID mention that I saw an NPC in rheinland with turkish names? The other ones were theories, about folder and stuff, but what I said at first is what I saw with my own eyes, real proof. Also long ago there was also something inside the Tiger Shark Article, mentioning a turkish pilot using a certain setup which works well with this ship, however. Later on it got removed by someone...
The Colonial Republic maintains a lot of Greek culture, given that the majority of the people aboard their sleeper ships (originally sent to the Crayter Sector, of course) were from Greece/the Balkans region.
Liberty isn't just Space America; there are hints of Canada as well. I wouldn't be too surprised if even a small fraction of the population was somehow proud of their ancient French/Quebec heritage.
Then there's also the Unione Corse who draw from Corsica. However, they're not descended from modern Corsicans, but instead they look up to it similar to how (as mentioned before in this thread) medical/law/etc. professions do.
I saw someone mention Chinese in relation to the Coalition. Considering the name of one of their planets, this is likely true. Lore also mentions (I think?) that countries from the middle east were also a part of that, yet I don't know if anyone has made an Arabic character.
Bretonia also shows ethnic minorities, as frequently roleplayed in the Mollys. Some Rheinlanders are apparently Scandanavian/Nordic as well.
Overall, I'd say that it's up to the player if they want their character to be part of a minority, but it should be done within reason
"You see what your knowledge tells you you're seeing. ... how, what you think the universe is, and how you react to that in everything you do, depends on what you know. And when that knowledge changes, for you, the universe changes. And that is as true for the whole of society as that is for the individual. We all are what we know, today. What we knew yesterday, was different; and so were we."
- James Burke, The Day the Universe Changed (1985)

Don't forget about Poland! And East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and so on. In my opinion however Coalition would be so diversed (if they sent their own ships), that they would need a small sector for them. I've even read somewhere that Gallia does not even lie in Sirius, but they are already another sector... isn't it?
This would be less of an issue if the original game hadn't been so obtuse on who actually came along in the sleeper ships. It'd not be too far a stretch to imagine that the American sleeper also contained, apart from white Americans; the native Americans, the millions of their contemporary immigrants from all over the world, the list goes on.
Unless all the factions in Sol practiced some kind of extreme ethnic segregation, where no-one was allowed to leave their country of origin or have kids with someone of a different ethnic background, it'd be fair to assume that all the sleeper ships carried a fairly ethnically diverse group of people, from all over the planet, and that over time, they sort of congregated around others with similar backgrounds, forming the factions and nations we see today. Going by this assumption, it'd be fair to say that roleplaying someone of just about any ethnicity would be perfectly valid, although I'd expect that they'd be treated differently than, say, the "natives". I mean, it's not unreasonable to think, is it?

The Coalition at present is made up partially of the descendants of the saboteurs/spies that snuck on-board the Sleeper Ships.
The Former Coalition included the nationalities from Russia, China, Mid-East & North Africa. I've looked carefully into our lore and there was no Poland, E-Germany or Czechs included in the original Sol Coalition. *shrug* No Iron Curtain.
well, i know i'm new to this and haven't even finished the freelancer SP campaign, but as far as i understood this, the great war and the sleeper ships were far beyond today and this means germany is reunited and the cold war is over (in case there isnt one starting right now).
as for cultural minorities, i think that living on a sleepership and settling completely new (even hostile) solarsystems will form completely new cultures by itself, so there is only the heritage from the sleeper ship, but not the heritage of the country on planet earth that matters to most of the people AS.
