I can't use it as it is now. Constantly counterbalancing the weird movement of the camera by mouse movement is annoying like hell. I will give gunboats another try once they are fixed. Like now my aim is even worse at GBs than on other ships. =)

Yes, while i believe that indeed turret steering now provides many gunboat users with the ability to steer the boat and fire backwards at the same time, EDGE pilots did all that and more before turret steering was even implemented.

Rear view key. It's magical. It's difficult. It's pro.
Sorry, but if you think the advantage of turret steering is just to allow you to "steer the boat and fire backwards at the same time," you've severely missed the point.

Ah the things you -don't- know makes me cringe.... No wonder I was able to fight 3 EDGE GB's at once.

Hielor, not only backwards, um.. you can... shoot to the sides i guess? Which exactly is the only advantage of turret steering over rear view... but not a big one. As for disadvantages, you're steering with your keyboard, means you have less fingers to press other keys. Can you strafe [vertically aswell], change weapon groups, while holding thruster and occasionally hitting reverse, changing targets, toggling thruster and auto-level and finally hitting nanos when you're pants down and hear a snac - and do so smoothly?

With rear view fighting, you keep the targets in one place - behind you, which for many gunboats is the slim side of the hitbox to hit.

As in my original post, i stand by my opinion, that turret steering is a slightly inferior technique to rear view fighting when dealing with [color=#FF0000]-snub swarms-, especially bombers. Rear view fighting [at its best] allows you to remain in constant chaotic movement, while your accuracy does not suffer at all. Hitting a gunboat with a snac under these conditions is very difficult, effectively forcing the bombers to come ever closer, which translates to increased damage taken and not a whole lot increase in chance to hit.

Yes, turret steering allows you to be slightly more on the offensive side - you can turn around and follow the wounded snub for.. like a few seconds, in turn rendering yourself ignorant to the other attackers.

Rear view fighting in turretboats is a purely defensive technique, meant to minimize incoming damage in hopes of outlasting your attackers.

Turret steering is of course the way to go if you intend to fight other gunboats or cruisers.

Veygaar, your vague description of a combat situation leaves a lot of room for guessing. I might also add that not all EDGE pilots were aces.

^Um, best way to kill another GB is not with steering... A steering GB is killed by a reverse boxing/chainfiring GB -easily-
A steering GB also cannot keep up with a Kiting/Boxing GB, and normally loses as well.

Perhaps you should read the OP to see how one sets up TSing to retain control while flying.

Contrary to what ya say, steering is not purely offensive, it's almost completely defensive... Especially when fighting multiple snubs, which it is best at.

Children please. A lot of it is the ship. For example the orca fires all guns to the rear but every other angle has at least one fewer gun, while most of the other gunboats have less turrets to the rear than to other angles. So learning how to shoot backwards is a tactical advantage with the Orca, but is pointless for many other ships.

IMO turret steering is better than reverse view for firing backwards, but I hate reverse view.

Turret steering is also helpful in snub swarms, especially when you toggle the afterburner and fly in a circle, it gives the bombers fits! They can't snac or nothing. It's almost kind of lame.

I find it all depends on player skill, and which method they are better at. Plus the type of GB, and weapons mounted.

Reverse boxing/chainfiring gunboat remains static for the duration of his attack, when a steering gunboat approaches it and starts circling around, you obviously have to do something else.

Kiting/boxing gb [boxing in rear view to control range, i presume..?] might be better, although from my limited experience of gb vs gb fights [which i personally don't enjoy same as i don't enjoy battleship vs battleship because too much depends on stats when skill level is similar] the boat that pursues hits more than the one which kites because his guns have more speed [both with full turret loadouts].

You mean... use "Mouse look"? Gee thanks.

Whatever works, and i won't deny that turret steer works vs snubs too. Both techniques have more similarities than differences, and it's own advantages. For example, turret steering is easier, rear view fighting is a pain to adjust to. I use both myself where applicable.

Rear view however has one unique advantage currently... but i'm not going to describe it here due to the fact that probably less than 5% of gunboat users know about this if at all. Sorru.
