Since my laptop is widescreen, I'm really interested in this too. So, can we get an ok on this?
Alternatively, that thing that Norexan linked to would be a good alternative, if not better.
There is no reason for this to be illegal. We have been running it on my the USA server for months now and it has been approved by the admins plus it also clearly states on the GC rules that hud color changes is not against the rules. This is actually my writeup from the USA forum.
This is no different than getting a red hud or a green hud. However instead of replacing them with another color, you're removing them all together. Yes all the buttons that were there are still there and still work, just the background is not there.
You can press backspace however then you cant see the list now can ya? Right.
Next comparing this to transparent ships is flat out wrong. The fact that your backgrounds on your hud are transparent is very very different than your 5k units train being invisible to other pilots.

Clearly the transparent backgrounds hud does not affect server one bit.
Have you tried it with Battleship/anything with more then 9-10 guns? Can you still scroll down/up the guns list or not?

I did this for the following files: hud_shipinfo.cmp, hud_target.cmp, hud_shipinfo_min.cmp, hud_target_min.cmp
This makes just the large side panels transparant (the ones that end up blocking a good portion of your screen). Not only is it functionally beneficial, it looks a lot better too.

Those are when you're scanning the targets ship and so forth right?
If you are going to play around with this, do not delete the middle top background. When i was doing testing bug was reported when deleting the top background (enter formation, free flight, dock, and the go to background) The mouse would get screwed up if that background is deleted.

That panel can be blanked out by default. Check your F1-options for this.

the additional effect to the original setup is, that all the buttons are still working (like it is in aets version), but the backgrounds of the upper buttons have vanished (with one exception, maybe someone figures that out as well).

and the quote from the bug report

"Every once in a while, when launching from a base with these changes in effect, I get some kind of interface glitch that causes my cursor to behave as if it is over an interface window (i.e. it's an arrow instead of a crosshair) and i cannot turn my ship or otherwise do anything without using the F1-F4 commands and the map, in other words im useless in combat and cannot change course."
