I like the idea of using 1 time commands that set rep, location, and basic starting ship. A few examples off the top of my head:
/start outcast - Gives you a Dagger LF, and sends you to Malta.
/start BAF - Sends you to Battleship Suffolk, and gives you a Cavalier LF
/start bowex - Sends you to Lancaster Trade Center, and gives you a Clydesdale FRT
/start rogue - Ships you off to Buffalo, and sets you up with a Bloodhound LF
In addition, you could start as a civilian in each house, and get an appropriate ship and basic rep for that.
/start LCiv - New York, with a Starflier
I think you all get the idea. You could also start all new players in Bastille, and put something in their cargo hold telling them what command to do to get out. Perhaps with an added note saying that hopefully that's the last time that they'll see the inside of Bastille?
Ah I can just see the n00bs starting in bastille and hitting launch right away, it makes me laugh... ( I like the idea though. Personally I would be content with just being able to start in any of the 6 factions with the most alliances: the four houses and 2 Hispania factions.)
I think starting ship should be starfly for all starting points... whole point is just RP and skip annoying "killed by damned stupd NPCs" part when you are trying to move your starflee from NY into Omicron minor or just Vogtland.
changing start possition IS possible, FLshell (something like flhook) i think it is, has this option.
when make char, you type /dot, that gives you a list of possible reps.
then you typ /restart "your pick" and youll get kicked. you rejoin and your rep is changed, + your in a diffrent starting location.

I found evidence auto rep-fixing might be happening, check it out:

These seem very promising. Any dev who could do that around?
I wrote a really funny FL story, but it disappeared when the old forum went away. So, no lulz for you today.
.beam exists (and admins know it well)
repfixing exists (I already have seen admins changing reps in game)
system limitation exists (you can't givecash in bastille)
now, only the ship/gun fix is missing. But I think it's completely possible.

I've written a plugin to "restart" characters with the correct ship, reps, location, etc. At this time there is no plan to deploy the plugin on the server. This might or might not change in the future...the decision to deploy it or not is above my paygrade.
