What kind of ID were you using and what were you hauling? That makes a huge difference. Pirating someone with several tons of valuable ore x million is way different than if they were hauling food. Or if you work for Republican, well, you know how Unioners can be to them.
Though I wonder if you were pirated at a place multiple times, why did you keep going back?
I would agree that there are some really powergaming people on the server, not only as pirates but in lawful and invite only factions and other indies.
But...
I dont want to be mean really, but if after 4 times you still didnt do one of these:
-look in the player list to see if they were still there and avoid them in your route
-hire someone to kill them
-kill them yourself on another ship (if you survived the encounter without being killed or dock-fleeing)
-hire a scout to fly ahead
-choose something else to do as long as they are there
then I'm very sorry, but you deserve to be pirated.

Nope it doesn't. It means you can't engage, what means after your shields are down to 50%, you can shoot back as self defense.
Thought I clarify that while making the pirate's job more fun.

Technically traders are allowed to pass the same system infinity times, regardless of killed or not. To avoid "Kill me now, I'll lose less and then trade over your nose with a smirk" the pirates are also allowed to blow it up/pirate it infinity times as well.
Disregard the "pay" and "hire and escort" nonsense. Man up, buy a heavy transport and pimp it full of guns. That way you stand much better chance in these situations. Use /setmsg for a quick self defence line then immediately blast them if you think the demand is too much. You might even be able to humiliate the pirate this way.

Learn to deal with it yourself. Good luck.
It is possible to do so only if the pirate is new otherwise in 90% of the cases it means dead for you and lose of the whole cargo np.
I would say learn to fly in groups and convoys with scouts.

i have read a couple of things here i disagree on,
first of all , that a escort would be useless because it doesn't kill the pirate before the pirate kills the transport.
a good escort is equipped with a cruise disruptor , scouts ahead on lanes , and when he sees a pirate , he cd's the pirate so the transport has time to run off (its not all about the blue message)
also i read about logging in on another ship to kill the pirate
in my book that's called metagaming (correct me if i am wrong)
using good tactics you should be able to fend off most pirate encounters easy , all you need to do is cooperate with other players.

Cap 8 Shire! Hellz yeah!
Also good if you have more than 1 Cap 8 Shire. Escorts make you even scarier.
A Cap 8 Shire and an escort is a force to be reckoned with.
Best would be two Shires and one or two fighter escorts. Scares the pirates senseless.
