Maybe they could do something similar to what IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 does. They have a system set up so that it uses individual skins for each plane which is located in a folder called PaintSchemes. All the texture files (which can even be edited in microsoft paint) are the same size and stuff so i think that has something to do with it.

-Non-members using another groups skin could be sanctionable if not used with permission and an SRP.
I don't like what is written hereinabove.
Half of the PvP-oriented characters will have their ships painted black (and lights turned off). However. Liberty Rouges could be taken to whole another dimension of misspelling.

If you can't see a black ship with a big target box and an x over it, you wouldn't beat them pvp'ers in a fight anyway.
Skinning isn't just the matter of duplicate MAT files, it meens duplicate ship files aswell, cause every faction would have to have thiere own line, even if it was just the same ship. Every mesh would need to be named differently, all new materials with all new names.
I like the idea, i sugested it a long time ago but it really would just be too hard and too costly to impliment.
The way i thought it could be done is some kind of hook to read the material CRCs from an ini file or somthing in a per faction/ID basis instead of reading it from the VMeshData file in the CMP. Then all we would need is the new MAT files or even same mat with the extra texture inside.
I wish it could be done, it would be cool. Honestly though it's a bigger task than it may seem at a glance.

I would like to propose skinning, with each faction designing a ship skin for each ship it has for it's group. True, it needs to be available for all factions for it to be visible during play but we could make it part of an overall mod. It'll give some individuality amongst factions and be kinda kool.
Good idea in theory, but in practise it means mod updates and lots of them. Each newly skinned ship will have to have a seperate CMP, SUR and MAT defined...
Maybe a better idea would be the use of "badges", mountable equipment much like those cargo pods. They would add a small plaque to the hull of the ship where a faction banner could be displayed on. Main issue would be defining these for various sizes, and setting up each model to be able to use them...

disapprove.
it is yet too early to think about custom ships.
Gitano, Spatial, RT, Wasupu, Kamara, BH bomber, Bottlenose, Mammoth, Gallic ships (except Brigand line), RH gunship, Molly gunship, IMG transport/miner, Lib carrier, Zoner GS, AI drone, Salvager.
I dont know if I pointed at all ships that are far not perfect, but the idea is to make common ships good quality, all of them. Ships for eberyone - objective number one, custom ships - at free time.
