No you are looking at the problem from a wrong angle.
We have a boom in unofficial groups forming up and rp'ing. Look at the Open Market, Player Base and in the Communication Channel. The will is there for players to form up and play in groups and to RP (and by using tags they are being accountable for their actions too, voluntarily), problem is that official factions do not seem to attract those players at the moment. So the emphasis should be on how to make official factions more open/welcoming so people choose to join existing factions rather than just forming their own.
TBH doesn't have any activity problems, nor do we have only a few people active.
It all depends on how much dedication is shown by the faction leaders.
Well, i am still not sure why perfectly fine indy factions with cool people and cool rp should be carted into official factions^^
I mean, they perfom just fine, add diversity don't cause trouble with anyone(ok, not all of them but you know )
As long as there is nothing at least tiny weeny bit worhtwhile for official factions they are the same as an unofficial one + the funny tracker.
So everyone is free to pick exactly his ideal faction from all available or make his own - and with probably 5 times more indy factions it is pure statistic that a player will find "his" faction to be an indy one.
Basically the question is a, are official factions still needed as they are more or less equal to anyone else, so you could scrap the distinction official/unofficial or
b, should concepts be developed to make officaldom actually worth it
Myeah , actually Rodnas is right.
The vast majority of the indies do their best to fit in the established RP , and don't need to be official because they function perfectly as a indie.
At the other hand there's faction players who act like asshats and give official factions a bad name.
The difference is , official faction players can be corrected if they show bad behaviour.
Indies don't have any responsibility's as Rodnas mentioned , that's why I think official factions should get more tools to deal with those cases.
well if you dont have problems with activity in your faction, and you have a lot of fun, then why do you want more power to your faction?
EDIT: Also what is that about me giving TBH a difficult time on my indie? My indie what? I have had two corsair characters in my time here, one of which is a legate i had for a week and sold and the other is an eagle I got parked in conn that never been out of the place.
edit edit: sorry 3 characters, i had a Gladiator named Don.Carlos, and the second I made it Benitez asked if I could rename it, so I called it Don.Juan instead. Sold that too, never left Conn.
This topic is too old. I don't think that there is will for solutions.
I also understand why the situation is like that, there are bunch of bad trolls both among faction players and among indie players. The only real disadvantage of the factions is chat list/player list, if the chat list is fixed the rest should be ok.
Otherwise factions would continue to sux compared with indies, none is idiot enough to let the trolls gank him 10 to 1 because it happens that they have more ships at that time, chat list metagaming is the real problem of the factions.
The rest should not be so important if this is fixed.

SSSSHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII , okay , i am a moron!
You weren't that Anaximander that was hanging around with Rmorph and stuff , i take it all back , i'm a donkey.
If people just bate the official faction for no reason other then they think the official faction is childish, then how can we change their minds when they are so made up?
Honestly, I'm all for Indies. But official factions do need more then useless FR5 and useless FR2.

restrict indies to a freelancer and generic pirate ID.
problem solved.
Edit: Anaximander , I dunno if you changed over time , if that is the case ignore the following, but I remember you giving TBH such a difficult time on your indie , basically trying to rebel to every little thing we did.
I considered that disrespectful trolling.

As a member of only one official faction, and my longest running (indy) char being a direct enemy of that faction, I've seen both sides, and I've always actually had the ideal, that yes, only generic IDs would be used by indies.
However to balance this, a lot more would have to be given to the generic IDs - E.G: Allow FL to do everything he could in SP, such as pirate. Official factions would have to be more lenient - E.G: Only NOT letting someone in if they have a reason to, rather than the guy having to give them a reason to let them join, and only telling members not to do stuff if it's against the npc faction's RP. And factions should get more powers, E.G: Handling their own FR5s.
This is obviously quite radical, so i dont expect it anytime soon.
