This idea came to my mind just a few minutes ago, a commodity as an alternative to Crew both for RP and POB management purposes. In my mind they are more expensive than their human counterparts but don't depend on FOW, while depending on machine components but on a much slower rate. Perhaps a drone bay as a POB module should be constructed before they can be used? Idk man.
Perhaps it's too much of a hassle to disturb the POB balance. But even then I think they should be around as an RP commodity. Most stations/planets have their docks regulated by robots anyway and I've seen quite a few people RPing as drones while not belonging to Gammu AI or anything (saw this especially on miners) and I think it's great. Discuss.
That is a cool idea. I've noticed there's a company that is making androids inrp as well. A possible alt could also be them...but the catch should be that some houses and factions might want to ban the use of AI/robot crews and workers, and definitely in the case of human replicant androids. So I'd think it would be cool to introduce them but see them as contraband in most places. I guess that would make bases operating on robots/androids also potentially illegal operations.
Bring on the android/robot smuggling and confiscation! If they did work on bases there could also be a wave of people shifting to robot/android slaves, and a need for police to enforce law on those who take the cheaper easier path and get caught.
I could see the appeal for POB owners, however it might prevent people from striving for a Core 5, if the owner essentially has the benefit of a Core 5 without reaching it. It would make sieging harder obviously, even for lower Core POB's, since it takes away the necessity for players to log and maintain them. It would probably increase the number of POB's for the Community to contend with. Other than the convenience for the POB owner, I don't see a great upside for this.
One suggestion that I think might be cool, is to allow POB's to have temporary cloaks. Maybe allow a cloaking platform/s to be installed that diminishes the POB in some other way, but with the correct commodities and platforms, the POB could be allowed to cloak for a short time. This might come in handy when POB owners are asleep and unable to defend their bases.
Providing players a way to spend less time supplying a base but at a greater cost is an idea I've seen @Durandal throw around before. This seems like a good way to implement something like that.

I don't think this would be a real problem if the price of the said item is balanced accordingly. It would be one big and expensive supply run instead of many small runs.

Especially in places like Rheinland, where unemployment is a huge problem, use of servitude drones could be frowned upon. Factions like Unioners, Farmers Alliance etc. could treat the hauler as combat target.

Ahh yes but all the more reason for the four houses to make the use of the commodity on a base illegal inrp. It would not remove the need to supply a base with repair commodities, just f/w/o. Rp could become about the issue of keeping a human crew or not. In emergencies people could resort to robots, or indi operations could go an illegal route and use robots or androids at risk of discovery. Making them expensive though seems a reasonable balancer.
I suppose I'd see robots being a legal alternative, or used with license. Just my opinion but I have wondered why the houses allow the legal use of human replicants. I wouldn't be using androids myself, and robots only under a siege situation perhaps, depending on how far out a base is. But yes let police/navy/intel players search bases for robots and androids workers. If you could see it in the base info tab where the crew says 200, and show 'robots/androids' instead, they could make sure bases in their space are clear. And of course those who frown on them or just want to steal them could hunt for them.
