Tachyon weapons mean the perfect transition between high damage and fastness - they do a relatively high damage, have a long range, a little bit faster than the Plasma weapons, and have a better energy usage. They are most effective against Molecular shields, and least effective against Positron shields.

Comparing

By effectivity on shields, Tachyon should be compared with Photon or Laser weapons, but because of damage, Photon would be more effective - the comparing effect high effectivity on Molecular and Positron shields with a reduced effectivity on Gravitron shields and an average-high enegy usage.Changing the photon to laser effects an increased speed and less energy usage.
