Successful People See in Shades of Grey
John Crown, 'affectionately' nicknamed King by his Buccaneer compatriots, was born into the mining slums of Leeds 32 years ago on the 29th of August. Almost from the day he was old enough to walk his neighborhood unaccompanied, he was exposed to a life of crime. Local petty criminals used him to traffic illicit materials due to his lack of years making him a poor target for suspicion. Having already been baptised in the murky mire of the underworld, he went on to strive in his chosen profession during and after his education.
Crown is believed to have attended school for as long as was legally required before leaving to get a 'job'. In actual fact, his time treading water in the educational system was mostly spent gathering like minded youths in an attempt to form his own gang. Needless to say this endeavour did not go according to plan; after a spate of successful break-and-entries, muggings and other assorted thefts lasting over a year, they were shut down by a far larger gang. The Bretonian Buccaneers.
This is believed to have been Crown's first in-person encounter with the Buccaneers, which ended in blood for his fledgling empire. Needless to say, he saw power and wanted a piece of the pie. Abandoning his old friends he set off to seek out one of the men that had thoroughly beaten his group into a pulp, and eventually found one. The now deceased Lieutenant, Frederik Gortuna.
Promptly signing himself up as a Prospect, Crown entered a whole new phase of his criminal career.
A Life of Crime
Having pledged himself to the Buccaneers at the tender age of 16, Crown proceeded to go through the motions that would allow him to progress through the organisation he had become a part of. He spent a good year of his life doing the leg-work of other Buccaneers who were delegating their own tasks to him. This phase, although tedious, would serve Crown in good stead, allowing him to travel freely throughout Planet Leeds to serve the various splinter cells of the Buccaneer gang. For the Buccaneers were well entrenched on Planet Leeds, and had a presence in most of the major cities and towns as well as a number of the sizable mining colonies. This traveling allowed him to forge contacts throughout the shadowy world of crime he was party to.
It is believed that he first met the infamous John Morris at this point, who although still monstrously sized, was at least fully human at that point.
And so at the dawning of 802A.S. Crown did become a fully blooded Buccaneer, which allowed him to mercilessly delegate his own tasks to other Prospects and generally cause said new blood hell. There is much speculation among the one psychologist who somehow survives inside the Buccaneer's ranks as to where this sadistic streak towards prospects originates from - after all, they were all a Prospect at one point or another. He believed that it was a natural mental defence mechanism that develops some time between the third time a Buccaneer has been ordered to scrub the lavvie with his toothbrush and the second time he's been told lick a Superior's boots clean. Something along the lines of, "those bastards made me do it, so these new guys are bloody well going to too!" This thesis was delivered as he watched several prospects he'd ordered to scrub the lavvie eyeing him hatefully.
For the next five years, Crown happily served as a Buccaneer under the watchful (and often malevolent, bloodshot and sadistic) eyes of his Lieutenant commanders, at which point another career defining moment reared it's ugly head: The arrival of lieutenant Henry Morgan at the local Buccaneer HQ he'd been dossing at. It's believed that it was at this point that Crown obtained the trust (or at least non-loathing) of the man that would eventually lead the Buccaneers back to the stars.
Aim For the Stars... With a Big Gun
And so in the dying throws of 816A.S. lieutenant John Crown received news that lieutenant Henry Morgan had been forced to jump ship by the sheer force of the BPAs displeasure, who wanted him for crimes varied and imaginative. And so life went on, with Crown continuing to manage the local HQ he had been entrusted with oh so many years ago, while making the lives of subordinate fellow Buccaneers living hell. However, as 817 A.S. feebly emerged from it's birth throws, it appeared that Lieutenant Henry Morgan had returned, but with a ship and shiny tales of space profiteering. And this did mightily interest Crown.
Meeting with Morgan for the first time in a great many years, Crown did outline his interest in Morgan's tales of derring-do, and so Morgan's underground army of loyal supporters did grow. And so did he fail to convince the current Captain John Hawkins as to the merits of his plan. Crown, among a great many others voiced their displeasure at this, and before the doubting leader could issue the statement "you disloyal bastards" he'd been voted out, with Morgan replacing him as the boss-man of the Buccaneers. Hawkins took this with best grace, for he knew the Buccaneers Code as well as any other.
So so the newly elected Captain did grin, and the Buccaneers once again set their eyes upon the stars. Crown among four other worthies was approached by the Cap't and offered an unrefusable offer - help lead the Buccaneers back to their former glory. It was time to stretch the Buccaneers wings and soar to the void; they'd been cooped up on the nightmarish (if profitable) hellhole of Leeds for far too long.
If It's Not Nailed Down, It's Mine
And so Crown did enjoy himself immensely, putting his piloting skills he'd obtained over the decades through joy riding stolen ships around Leeds' atmosphere to good use. And he was rewarded with a Hawk fighter ship. Only this lacked much in the way of... Impact. Crown and the other Buccaneers began the hard and back-breaking job of working their way up in the universe, until eventually at the dawn of 817A.S. he brought his now iconic Waran Heavy Bomber. More guns, more explosions, less problems. And this did suit him fine.
Helping to guide the (abit small) space-borne Buccaneer horde from the docking bays of Trafalgar (which ironically enough in centuries past had belonged to the Buccaneers), a great amount of money was there to be made. Obtaining this money was usually done through the intimidation and assault methods, which worked to great effect - especially with the beating war drums distracting the authorities.
And so did life continue. Crown now has a reputation for suicidal (if effective) piloting of his equally famous bomber. He is arguably one of the larger thorns in the side of the Bretonian authorities when it comes to the Buccaneers, having caused countless millions of damage to public and private property. There has also been numerous diplomatic 'incidents' with rival pirate organisations caused by Crown, with 'The Pillage Of OPG Transports', 'The Assault Of The Molly Barghests' and the 'Annihilation of Wandering Rogues' to name but a few.
