Tal "Underscore" Ravis is a Marine-turned-Freelancer who is the main protagonist of Discovery Freelancer.
Early Life
Tal was born on August 6th, 798 A.S. in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Planet Manhattan. The first of three children born to a disadvantaged family of blue-collar workers, he was also the least successful in comparison to his brothers Hudson, who became a Primary Fleet Liberty Navy Officer, and Xavier, who dealt in the lucrative platinum trade before joining the ALG. Indeed, he showed little potential in academics and labor skills, and upon graduating from high school at the age of 18, he found himself enlisting in the Libertonian Marine Corps for lack of anywhere else to go.
Service History
Tal turned out to be a rather unspectacular Marine, only able to obtain the rank of Lance Corporal in four years of service. He was trained to be a Reconnaissance Man, and was subsequently assigned to the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, based out of Planet Los Angeles. As there was not yet a large-scale ground offensive that required the deployment of deep reconnaissance units, his unit was relegated to conducting boarding actions in the immediate vicinity of Los Angeles, often capturing shipments of cardamine or slaves.
Once he attained the rank of Lance Corporal, he was selected to attend Scout Sniper School, which he graduated during his third year of service. As there was still no real use for his unit, he returned to boarding the occasional unarmed transport alongside other elements of the planetary garrison.
His enlistment came to end after four years, when he decided that he would rather pursue a different career than continue serving.
Later Career
Once out of the Corps, he quickly realized that he'd need a method of providing for himself, but found out over the course of six months that he lacked the patience to fly freight, the temper and personality to be a cop, and the mechanical skills required to be a mechanic. After a slew of several more jobs that left him out of work in a matter of weeks, he decided upon Freelancing as a viable career path, and sought out jobs that involved the one thing he was good at: killing people.
Of course, with his luck, he never actually got a chance to shoot anybody despite his qualifications, instead landing a security job with the Core in Planet Nauru, where he resided in a small, insulated metal box for six months before returning home. Deciding to take a break from sand, bad smells, and general boredom, he signed on part-time to haul freight for the Gas Miners Guild. As GMG manpower was whittled away by increasing Outcast and Corsair activity in the Sigmas, he was reassigned to interceptor duty, and for a brief time flew a Karasu out of Ogashawa.
He temporarily left the GMG to take part in a large scale ground offensive on Planet Tomioka, working with Dragon and Order forces under an alias as they sought to recover a downed Togo.
Once he returned from the action and took up work with the GMG again, he was assigned to Niigata Star City, and sources say that he is still stationed there to this day.
