La Fere was built in 364 A.G.S., only ten years after the nearby Saint-Quentin colony was constructed. Ironically, convicts were employed for the prison's construction, who were housed in Saint-Quentin until La Fere was completed. While they did not form the majority of the construction workers, they did make several attempts to sabotage the site. One such attempt was moderately successful; an explosive detonated behind an unsecured bulkhead caused an entire module to crash into Laon. There was only one casualty however: the careless convict who attempted to plant the bomb. Tensions between workers and prisoners increased so much that the use of prisoners was discontinued.

La Fere is possibly the worst and most hated space prison currently maintained in Gallia. It is not a particularly large facility, and it suffers from extensive overpopulation, since dangerous criminals convicted on Amiens are always brought to La Fere, and the crime rate on the planet is rather high. In recent years, many people convicted for collaborating with the Council and Maquis ended up on the station as well. Harsh conditions and constant complaints forced the Crown to investigate La Fere's actual circumstances, and in 724 A.G.S. the warden of the prison was demoted. However, prison renovation plans were halted by the new war that Gallia is fighting in Sirius, which means conditions in the prison are unlikely to change in the coming years.
