Despite being the first man-made base within Zurich, the Lausanne Complex doesn't officially exist. Hidden deep within the Vaud Cloud of the Zurich system, the base's location has allowed the GRI freedom from any political or ethical restraints while conducting inhumane neurological and cybernetics research. Construction started in 732 AGS with the detention center and finished in 736 AGS with the research facility, with the station running at full capacity ever since.
Many political prisoners and dangerous criminals who seemingly disappeared without a trace during the civil war eventually ended up as test subjects on this station, officially pronounced dead long before their actual demise. Secrecy is paramount to the security and the efficiency of the complex and operations at Lausanne are highly compartmentalized, with very few personnel aware of more than what is directly relevant to their own work. Because of this, work at Lausanne is subject to rumor even among the scientists and engineers stationed aboard. Speculation ranges from common theories such as the development of new interrogation techniques or biological weapons programs to more esoteric notions, such as the creation of biological supercomputers and direct neurological integration into fighter craft. Though none of the rumors have ever been confirmed, the one certainty is that none of Lausanne's test subjects ever leave the facility alive.
