− | Being the first planet that had been discovered in the Virginia system, Columbia used to be both a fascinating world and a closely guarded secret of the Liberty Navy, all information of it having been classified and only accessible by the highest echelons of the Navy and the President, as per rule of former President Jacobi. Posessing an atmosphere, environment and weather conditions surprisingly similar to those of [[Planet Los Angeles]] in its current state, Columbia is a fertile world capable of supporting human life and it is host to a local flora and fauna as rich in variety as [[Planet Manhattan]] is in cultural facets. Columbia retained most of its fascinating appeal ever since its initial discovery, however by now the entire planet's surface has been charted and cartographed, with similar progress having taken in listing of the planet's abundant natural resources.

− | Several installations have been built on the planet's surface, including many stations responsible for ecological and natural research, weapon and equipment manufacturing centers and the Chayenne Mountain Complex, the highly-secured Headquarters of the Liberty Navy. With recent completion of the latter, a vast amount of information regarding the planet itself has now been declassified and its true purpose has been unveiled, together with the reasons for the planet never having been colonized in the traditional sense.

− | In the event of hostile takeover or outright destruction of the Libertonian systems, Columbia is intended to serve both as a fall-back point for the Liberty Military and a safe haven to evacuate the populace of any system suffering such a fate. Vast resource stockpiles and subterranean shelters have been constructed on the planet over the recent years in order to make sure the evacuated populace's survival until the fallen system could be taken back or, in the event of a cataclysm of any kind, until the evacuees would have established a new life on Columbia. To ensure that Columbia is safe and protected from direct assault on the planet itself - a most unlikely scenario - an orbital satelite defense grid as well as planetary shielding systems second only to the ones present on Planet Manhattan are currently being constructed. In addition, the Arlington Minefield has already been completed, surrounding the planet almost entirely to prevent any kind of possible incursion.

− | Regardless of the possible importance of the planet in the future, provided a worst case scenario was to occur, currenly no plans to install a Docking Ring are underway, as for now the limited trafic can easily be handled the old-fashion way.
