The planet proved less-then-optimal for human colonization due to the arctic climate dominating most of the surface, but exploration teams detected signs of rich mineral deposits on, and not far below the surface. It was not until 204 A.G.S. that the first mining colonies were established, followed in the next century by an extensive industrial and civilian influx. The civilian population clustered around the industry, which gave rise to a few massive cities which housed the bulk of the planet's population, all located in the equatorial region.

Rather then curbing this, Gallic leaders made the controversial decision to accellerate the process. These efforts succeeded, and the average temperature was raised by a full 12 degrees by 400 A.G.S., and widened the equatorial "hot band" by several hundred kilometers.
