The War of Sol (also called the Alliance-Coalition War) was the name of a war in the Sol System that lasted for almost a century and ended with the unfortunte destruction of the entire system by the Nomads. Because of the sheer amount of time that has passed between the present day and the war, along with the loss of some parts of the Alliance archives, no one can remember who or what caused this war, although there is a possibility that the war was to gain control over the colonies of Sol. All that is known today is that there were two sides: the Alliance (led by the USA, Western Europe, Japan, and Australia) and the Coalition (led by Russia, China, the Middle East, and Africa).
The war started in 2160, but small scale conflicts had been taking place long before the full force of the Coalition Navy was unleashed on the Alliance. From about 2100 to 2160, the Coalition, after signing a Unification Pact that united the Eastern Nations, coerced the Alliance into giving them access to their colonies. In order to prevent a full scale war, the Alliance began a policy of appeasement to the Coalition, hoping that the Coalition would stop its demands once it got what it wanted. However, the Coalition did not stop, and small scale conflicts, such as the Lunar Conflict and the Europa Conflict, began to take place in the colonies in Sol, although they were not enough to provoke a full scale war. In order to avoid war, the Alliance proposed the Balma Treaty, which would end all the small scale conflicts in Sol. The Alliance eagerly signed the treaty, but when the Coalition's admiral, Admiral Kulov, arrived near Jupiter's moon, Europa, to "sign" the treaty on September 20, 2160, it was realized that the Coalition were not going to end this peacefully. Instead, as the Alliance fleets were standing down after hearing news of the treaty, the Coalition admiral ordered a huge fleet to de-cloak next to Europa. Afterwards, the fleet attacked and utterly dsetroyed the French and Italian fleets and the Alliance base named Fort Kennedy located on Europa, which began the War of Sol. The inner planets, including Earth, were overrun by Coalition forces and taken under their control and all who resisted were brutally executed, since Admiral Kulov, the mastermind behind the surprise attacks of the Coalition, claimed, "We have no time for prisoners." All hope for ending the war peacefully was destroyed by this betrayal. Two years later, the Alliance recovered the outer planets and began its assault on the inner planets. Eventually, the Coalition was beaten back to Mercury. However, by some unknown means, the Coalition gained the upper hand and began to counterattack.
By the time of the 23rd century, the Alliance knew it could not win the war. In desperation, the Alliance constructed and launched five sleeper ships in order to begin a new civilization far from the war and strife that had befallen Sol. Each sleeper ship was christened after its patron nation: the Bretonia (carrying British colonists), the Rheinland (carrying German colonists), the Hispania (carrying Spanish and Mediterranean colonists), the Kusari (carrying Japanese colonists), and the Liberty (carrying American colonists). On the day of the launch, the Coalition attacked another one of Jupiter's moons, but against all odds, the colony ships broke through the Coalition blockade and headed for the Sirius System.
Shortly after the Exodus, the remaining Alliance bases were overrun until all that remained was Pluto, where the Alliance prepared for one gallant last stand against the Coalition. However, as the Allaince ships took off from the planet, a Nomad superweapon de-cloaked in front of them. In those few moments, all the fighting stopped and the soldiers just stood the dumfounded by the alien ship's size and beauty. In those few moments, they were finally united, but those few moments would be their last, since those aliens had not come in peace. The Nomad superweapon fired a torpedo at the Sun and fled. The torpedo collided with the Sun, causing a supernova (which is strange, since a star with the mass of the Sun should not be able to cause supernova, which means that the Nomad torpedo must have affected the Sun somehow) and the resulting shockwave disintigrated all but one planet in the Sol System. Everything else, including the Alliance and Coalition fleets, were destroyed. Only one man survived on the dark side of Pluto. His name was Atticus Rockford, an Alliance (possibly American) general who fled the ruins on Pluto and headed for Sirius to warn the colonists. His ship is seen landing on Planet Manhattan, but his fate afterwards is unknown.
