Carrying unmounted IDs in your ship, as well as not equipping an ID, is a serious crime. A ship with a Civilian ID can only be attacked if it enters a Guard system, attacks another player, is over level 30, is at the site of a battle, is in possession of a CODENAME weapon, or is in the Connecticut system.

Civilian IDs are given to every new pilot. Never forget to transfer your ID each time you buy a new ship. On role-playing servers, the ID item serves as your RP identity. In addition to that, the ID works as the tractor beam of your ship for picking up cargo floating in space. Don't lose or unmount this item, and transfer it each time you buy a new ship, otherwise you will be unable to tractor goods in space.

When the pilot wishes to choose a faction they may purchase a new ID which can be found on the primary bases or planets of all the Sirius factions. The ID will only be buyable if the player is on friendly terms with appropriate faction. Several types of IDs exist and have different ship and action restrictions listed in the end of their descriptions.

Note that different Discovery servers might have different rules regarding ID usage. Refer to the rules of your server in order to know how different ID types should be used.
