Personality
Excerpt from file 20390-9 "Rheinwehr Medical & Logistics Branch Archives - Mid-Service Psychological Evaluation"
"Wilhelm Deneth Aleski shows a standard slate of characteristics that demonstrate introversion and deep introspection. Despite this, however, he does show good leadership skills. I credit this to his proper socialization during his youth.
My concerns, however, lies within his attitude in combat. The subject lives with a moral code which he has built, utilizing various experiences and events in his life to rationalize and legitimize his system. In the presence of a clearly-defined and unquestioned enemy, Wilhelm Aleski applies violence through a truly nihilistic bent. Several instances in which he shot the escape pods of several downed ships prove this. During evaluation interviews, he has explicitly stated having no qualm killing or maiming his enemies, those that are clearly defined and also contradictory to Aleski's moral system.
Luckily, given the subject's extremely low level of neuroticism, he rarely (if ever) experiences random outbursts of unsolicited violence. As such, it is my estimation that the subject (Wilhelm Deneth Aleski) remains fit for duty within the Rheinwehr and that he is an asset to our forces."
History
Childhood and adolescence
Born in 793 A.S. to Eckhard Aleski and Jeannette Aleski (nee Ramstein-Schrödinger), Wilhelm was the youngest of three other boys, Mark Alexander and Axel, both aged 27. Raised in the upper middle-class and aristocratic town of Wolfsburg in the outskirts of New Berlin's capital city, Wilhelm enjoyed a comfortable and relatively worry-free childhood, despite the Nomad War of 800 A.S. and the already weakened state of the Rheinlandish economy. His father is a highly ranked and prominent member of Rheinland's defense forces, while his mother is the Head Nurse of the Wolfsburg General Hospital.
Generally characterized as a very introverted and withdrawn child during his youth, Deneth showed tremendous prowess in academics. As well as finishing with top grades in all but one year of his pre-college education, he showed exceptional aptitude in English studies. By the age of 10, he could read, write and speak fluently in English.
As time passed, Deneth started exhibiting leadership aptitudes, becoming the captain of his high school's soccer club and taking up extracurricular activities. He had his first romantic relationship at the age of 17, however. It lasted four months.
Early adulthood
At the age of 18, at the recommendation of his father Eckhard and according to family tradition, Deneth was invited to attend the prestigious Militärische Hochschule des Rheinland, or Military College of Rheinland. The institution serves as the leading producer of commissioned officers within the ranks of Rheinland military forces and only the best and brightest are invited to attend the school.
After a three-year course in which he was taught the rudiments of warfighting, tactics & strategies, military doctrine, piloting skills alongside a civilian collegiate degree, Deneth graduated with the commissioned rank of Officer Cadet, a position that would put him in charge of a regular-sized battleship fighter squadron. His first deployment orders soon followed.
Service in the Rheinwehr
In 814 A.S., Offiziertanwerter Wilhelm Aleski accepted his first deployment orders. He was put in command of the 120th "Thor's Hammer" fighter squadron, a newly formed fighter/bomber wing based on the Battleship Regensburg, which has recently been moved to the Munich system. His deployment was slated to end in 816 A.S. with a customary promotion to the rank of Hauptmann. For him, it was the beginning to the career he had always aspired to, following the footsteps of his father, grandfather and forefathers bearing the Aleski name.
However, things would not go smoothly at all. The Battleship Regensburg, recently moved to Munich to ward off Unioner raids and protect shipping lanes, simply could not meet strategic and tactical expectations. Additionally, due to the war with Liberty, reinforcements to the Regensburg were scarce. Fighter wings were often ill-equipped and the pilots sent out to fend off Unioner strikes lacked proper training and experience. As CO of the 120th, Aleski was appalled at the conditions in which the men and women of the Regensburg had to fight. All of this was taking place while Kanzler Reinhardt took office, promising massive budget increases for defense. The young officer simply could not believe it.
Unfortunately for Aleski, few of the officers on board the Regensburg shared the young man's concerns. Every time the Officer Cadet attempted to bring up the obvious lack of attention and resources given to the enlisted ranks, his superiors would simply find a way to silence or censor him. Be it during officer debriefings, reports and so forth. Eventually, Aleski's superior officers (notably the Regensburg HC) were actively seeking to isolate and rid the ship of him once and for all. Bogus informal warnings of improper service conduct would soon become official performance complaints, then ill-founded disciplinary sanctions and even un-paid suspensions.
On September 4th, 816 A.S., during preparations for for a general scramble, Aleski got into a physical altercation with the Chief of Flight Operations, Major Bach. Immediately, Militär Polizei soldiers arrested the Officer Cadet and locked him in the Regensburg Brig, despite Major Bach being the actual instigator of the fight. He would be released only three weeks later, after his father "persuaded" certain individuals to let him go free of charges. However, this was simply too much for Deneth. Two weeks later, the officer did not report back from a routine patrol. His wingmen claimed that he was shot down.
As a matter of fact, according to ship maintenance logs, it was discovered that the transponder and IFF transmitter on Aleski's famed Wraith were disabled "as a cautionary measure" by engineers before he even took off. As such, it was impossible to track the ship's location or its status. Deneth Aleski had simply vanished. Whether or not the act was deliberate remained a mystery and Deneth was put as Missing in Action.
Switching sides
Deneth Aleski had actually switched sides, in a fit of disillusioned rage at having been lied to and getting stepped on for doing the right thing- protecting the men and women under his authority. Initially defecting to the Unioners, the latter decided he would be a better fit for the Red Hessians. With their help, he made his way to the Dresden system, the Vogtland Base to be more specific.
Things did not feel right, however. Aleski could not bear the idea of fighting, among other people, the people with whom he served just a few months prior. His opposition was not specifically towards Kanzler Reinhardt (though he was by no means appreciated by Deneth), but towards the lack of understanding the government maintained towards those who oppose them. In the summer if 817 A.S., he would leave Rheinland for good, seeking a new place to live. A place where, hopefully, different ideals would be respected. That place would be Bretonia.
Service in the BAF
Deneth voluntarily enlisted in the BAF during September of 817 A.S. at the New London Central Recruitment Center. His first assignment was on board the Battleship Suffolk, the flagship of the 5th Fleet. Thanks to his past experiences as an officer, as well as his knowledge of various ship types, the young pilot quickly gained the respect and friendship of his peers.
Weeks later, after sustaining a head injury during ejection drills, Aleski was given extended shore leave to recover. However, he failed to report back as designated and was declared MIA for a short while. Aleski came back some three weeks later safely. However, he would not tell anyone where he was, with whom and why. Military Section 5 is investigating. No chargers were laid.
In late July of 818 A.S., Deneth Aleski was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and re-assigned, from the 5th Fleet Suffolk to the 6th Fleet Essex, based in the Dublin system.
In August 818 A.S., Aleski was transferred again, this time to the Battleship Harlow, where he performs clerical and administrative work. His duties include, among other things, monitoring non-classified communications directed to the Bretonian Armed Forces, responding to outside inquiries on behalf of the Fleet Admiral and leading a team of administrative assistants working in the Office of the Fleet Admiral.
On September 16th 818 A.S., Deneth Aleski was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Despite being eligible for receiving command of a gunboat-class ship, Deneth Aleski chose to keep his posting to the HMS Harlow.
Only three days after being rescued from Corsair captivity, Deneth Aleski was given the rank of Commander.
Disappearance and possible capture
Exactly one month after his promotion to the rank of Lieutenant Commander, Deneth Aleski went missing in action after failing to report back from a joint patrol of the New London system (in coordination with the 5th Fleet Suffolk and one of the HMS Harlow's fighter wings). Of the ten pilots who took part in the patrol, only two were brought back to the HMS Suffolk, gravely injured and completely incapacitated. Combat-related death for Deneth Aleski is ruled out, as his LPET (Low-strength Personal Emergency Transmitter), a small subcutaneous radio transmitter that remains active as long as the host is alive, is still broadcasting. However, the signal received by the LPET is far too weak to triangulate a general region of Sirius, let alone a specific system. The fate of the seven remaining pilots is unknown to this date, presumably captured or killed in action. MI5 has opened an investigation, but initial evidence elements already point towards a particularly vicious Corsair ambush. No Bretonian Armed Forces P.O.W. has ever been retrieved from Corsair captivity alive.
Rescue
Deneth Aleski was rescued on January 19th 819 A.S. from Corsair captivity. The rescue operation was orchestrated by the Bretonian MI6 after receiving a tip from Red Hessian sources in Rheinland about the whereabouts of Aleski. Details about the rescue operation remains classified. The pilot was found slightly emaciated but otherwise unharmed. While he has returned to his post on the HMS Harlow, it will be months before Deneth Aleski assumes combat responsibilities.
