The Auvergne system is one of the few human-developed systems in Gallia completely devoid of habitable planets. None of the planets present in the system were found suitable for colonization, or even for building a mining outpost. Most of the system's economy is concentrated around two large space colonies: Clermont and Montlucon. Auvergne is also the least populated of the Extended Core Worlds systems (which include Ile-de-France, Orleanais, Picardy, Lyonnais, Maine, Berry, Auvergne and Provence) with a population of no more than 270,000.
Clermont was built in 549 AGS in the orbit of Planet Montferrand. It was initially a temporary installation that would house workers employed on other construction sites, including Riom. As years went by, the station was expanded with new modules and grew into a huge conglomerate that was classified as a Space Colony. Its population capacity rose from 3,500 in 550 AGS to over 9,000 in 680 AGS. Initial modules of the station are still operational, but they are in poor condition. Clermont has some of the cheapest living quarters Gallia has to offer for those who prefer living in space to dwelling planetside. More recent parts of Clermont have far more confortable living conditions. Food processing and some industry provide employment for most of the local population.
