Their appearance is a lot like goggles. The ring on the right serves planet-bound traffic and the left ring traffic coming from the planet to outer space. Docking rings also have defensive turrets mounted on them to engage hostiles foolish enough to venture too close.

Capital size ships are to big to fly through the docking rings so they need to use mooring fixture located above the docking rings.
