Planet Marseille is possibly the only planet in Gallia that was colonized earlier than the Crown sanctioned. Several ocean platforms were set up before the government greenlit construction of permanent oceanic settlements. Not much is known about whom those communities belonged to or if they are still operational. In 619 AGS, the first legal resort platforms appeared planetside. The planet was initially designed to serve as a high class resort with high prices and even higher quality standards. Most Gallic nobility consider Marseille the number one choice as a resort destination. While it was never officialy confirmed, it is rumored that Gallic monarchs themselves visited Marseille incognito multiple times beginning in 630 AGS and onwards.

The planet itself is an unspoiled oceanic paradise, with no landmass rising over 12 meters above sea level. The climate on the planet is relatively mild, with polar regions only slightly cooler than the equatorial regions that receive most of the sunlight. The thick atmosphere and deep oceans are in constant motion, forming an immensely complex hydrologic cycle that contributes to the unique climatic conditions. The planet's ocean life is abundant, with numerous species unlike any other organic life forms found elsewhere in Sirius. Creatures similar to Earth's echinoderms are very widespread in the upper oceanic layers. Several species of that group contain the symbiotic bacteria that generate the substance from which Nox is derived. The bacteria extracted from their hosts are shipped to drug laboratories in frozen form, which is the only way pure Nox can be extracted. So far, there have been a number of attempts to cultivate Nox-producing species elsewhere, but without much success. The bacteria cannot survive for long without their hosts, and symbiotic echinoderms require a very complex environment to live in throughout their life cycle.

Marseille is home to over four dozen resort settlements. This is not a large number compared to some of the other resort planets, but on Marseille they were intended to be large and versatile, providing multiple types of entertainment concentrated in a single place. The planet is also home to a large shipyard that produces cruise liners, yachts, and a wide variety of service ships necessary to ensure safe and reliable operation of the planet's facilities. While safety and comfort are the number one priority for companies in charge of operating Marseille's resorts, it is not unknown that Junkers, Unione Corse, and other "undesirable" elements frequent some of the planet's resorts. Apparently, a number of ships and even oceanic platforms exist planetside without any lawful regulations. For an unknown reason, the Royal Police will not move in to seize these facilities or somehow regulate the situation. Those ships and platforms are apparently the locations where Nox-producing bacteria are prepared to be shipped closer to its consumers, and where large amounts of Nox itself is produced. While no drug production may exist within the legitimate resorts, it is widely known that Nox is easily accessible anywhere on Marseille, and a fair amount of visitors go to the planet in order to acquire cheap Nox or to try out the "original" form of the infamous drug.
