Completely covered in a massive cloud of industrial smog, Giftnebel, Vogtland base is the very heart of Red Hessian operations in Rheinland, and the primary manufacturing facility for most new ships and weaponry. It was the first ever permanent base to be established by the movement.

Despite the Popular Revolution beginning in earnest in 672 A.S., the Hessian movement had made use of mobile bases comprised of hijacked and retrofitted transports, before the political fiasco of 700 A.S. forced the Bundschuh back underground, and the miners into another uprising. With the second attempt being far less successful than the first one, the Red Hessian ranks swelled with people poised to take the situation into their own hands in a slew of acts of vigilantism.

First discovered in 703 A.S. during recon conducted by Hessian raiders searching for possible attack routes and hiding spots, the enormous asteroid, so conveniently locked in a gravity field between several jump hole anomalies, has since been the major landmark for Hessian ships to rendezvous at before proceeding to assault nearby trade. By 705 A.S. efforts had been made by the former miners to build a fuel, supply and storage station there, thus providing the raiders with a viable fall back point and staging area. It wasn't soon before living quarters and massive docking spaces were carved into the rock itself, and the refuel and resupply area was moved inside the cavernous cave within. Many years later, Vogtland would become nothing short of a small space city, filling up almost the entire asteroid, housing and supporting hundreds of Hessians in between their raids and battles.
