I have spent the last few days overhauling the Player-Owned Base Guide to be much easier to read.
In addition to this, I have included some details relating to the content added in with Patch 5.0.
Hope you all appreciate the new look for the guide.
Good news everyone! Discovery now has a Nexus Mods page! We're going to be using this as a part of our mod promotion campaign and featuring media and articles there. We're also updating our ModDB page, although this is a little slower going.
The Nexus Mods page also features a brand new mod installer. This installer has been compiled to launch with 5.0's files, meaning you'll no longer need to patch in several years of updates after your download.
Mods on Nexus gain visibility through downloads, endorsements and votes for mod of the month. If you could download our snazzy new installer and then endorse, vote and leave a comment, it'll make a world of difference. If we can get onto the Nexus front page it'll give us a massive visibility bump.
We're still soliciting pictures through the Promotions Thread on the forum (https://discoverygc.com/forums/showthrea...tid=199273), and what we primarily need are pictures of live gameplay footage. We ideally would like a mix of awesome looking combat shots, and non-combat group activities like trade convoys. We're paying bounties for submissions we use!
We're going to be accelerating work on the new community Wiki (https://discoverygc.com/wiki2/Main_Page). This already has some generated pages, but we're going to need community help with filling out guides to help new players with getting started and potentially design work to help make the site look and feel more appealing.
Please share links to the Nexus page to anyone you think might be interested in Freelancer or arcade space sims in general. If you're still in touch with any old vets, maybe also see if they'd like to come take a look at what's changed. Installing the game and mod has never been easier, especially with the new website (https://discoverygc.com/).
As everyone has likely had enough time to prepare their PoBs for the deactivation of holiday mode, we will be disabling in it a little under half an hour, at 18:00 UTC server time.
This also means new PoBs can be deployed and siege declarations can be made and acted on. We will of course be keeping a close eye on how sieges unfold with the new siege mechanics detailed here.
Technology Compatibility 5.0, or:
How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love My Faction's Shipline
• With the exception of individual SRPs and fringe cases, faction tech cells are no longer split into 100%, 90%, 75%, etc. You either have the tech, or you do not.
• If a faction had a 75% cell and no strong justification for increasing it to 100%, it was removed.
• If a faction lacked tech options compared to contemporaries, new options were added where possible.
The system overall attempts to be much simplified from both an administrative and end-user point of view, but I am nonetheless aware of many cases where this might restrict player roleplay and agency. As such, I've also put forward a rework of Techcompat Exceptions, not the least of which because 75% cells no longer exist. In short, if you have a character looking to fly a ship that is unavailable to your ID's tech but is otherwise legal for you to fly, then it falls under a techcompat exception. These exceptions now no longer require that you make contact with an OF, although that is still the easiest path forward. ID line changes, including flying ships of a greater class than an ID allows, or acquiring ships and/or equipment that are unique, restricted, or otherwise limited still falls under a standard SRP request as before.
Specific tech cell changes follow below.
