The venerable Saumur is a Triomphant-class battleship which entered service in 626 AGS. Throughout its vast service life, it has achieved little more than guard duty, as the Triomphant class was rendered redundant by the introduction of the Charlemagne battleship, specifically designed for rearguard duties. As such, the Triomphants quickly found themselves obsolete, and many were scrapped as a result. This was not the case with the almost pristine Saumur, which went on to become a mobile academy for the Royal navy, in keeping with ancient naval traditions of old France where naval training used to be conducted solely aboard ships, such as the legendary Borda, which is why, even now, Gallic navy cadets are sometimes referred to as "Bordaches". Saumur has another striking nod to tradition in its motto: "Nec pluribus impar" - like no other - which were none other than the Sun King's personal words.
During the Amiens uprising, the Saumur found herself the unlikely flagship of a hastily assembled Royal navy defense force. Her and her fleet, crewed with cadets, recruits and whoever else was willing, found themselves critically outmatched by the Council forces, lead by the powerful and experienced La Fierté battlegroup. Aware of the only possible outcome, the Saumur surrendered before the battle reached its climax.
Nowadays, the Saumur is a hopelessly outdated warship. A refit would cost more than the sum of her parts, though she remains in a stellar condition given her age. In light of this, the Minarchy agreed to purchase her for a symbolic amount, and the Saumur now serves as regional headquarters for the Gendarmerie and is stationed in Provence. Expeditive improvements have been carried out on her fighter bays, combat information centre and transmission systems in order to help her perform her new mission. The atmosphere onboard is largely one of suspicion or complacency, depending on the crew's ties - or lack thereof - with the local population. An ancient rearguard warship now used as a law enforcement base in an almost lawless space: the Saumur is indeed like no other.
