As the Gallic invasion continued to push deeper into Bretonia, it became increasingly difficult to spare the resources, time, and manpower to rebuild lost battleships. The Fortitude-class battlecruiser was envisioned as a more cost-effective defense, one that most importantly was far faster to build, with Bretonian shipyards able to build three in the time it would take to replace one battleship.

Like most Bretonian vessels, the Fortitude was not built for speed. It was built to get into position to both dispense and absorb a truly terrifying amount of firepower, a task it succeeds admirably at. But as many pirate raiders have learned, it is not a slow vessel; battlecruisers of this class have been deployed several times for rapid response as a show of force from post-war Bretonia.
