Image Type?

Why .jpg specifically? Why not also .png? Both are comparable formats, and .png is much closer to truly lossless than .jpg? Korlus - (talk) (contribs) 00:01, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

The answer is very simple: We don't really want the lossless compression PNG offers, as it takes up a lot of storage space for a picture which is mainly going to be seen as a small ~100px high thumbnail. And secondly, JPG is a usually a lot better at compressing the relatively complex pictures that we're working with in this case. PNG is ideal and very good at compressing pictures with large areas of consisting one/few colours, such as vector art or pictures with simple/transparent backgrounds, not high-resolution pictures of planets.
