:The answer is very simple: We don't really want the lossless compression PNG offers, as it takes up a lot of storage space for a picture which is mainly going to be seen as a small ~100px high thumbnail. And secondly, JPG is a usually a lot better at compressing the relatively complex pictures that we're working with in this case. PNG is ideal and very good at compressing pictures with large areas of consisting one/few colours, such as vector art or pictures with simple/transparent backgrounds, not high-resolution pictures of planets. The answer is very simple: We don't really want the lossless compression PNG offers, as it takes up a lot of storage space for a picture which is mainly going to be seen as a small ~100px high thumbnail. And secondly, JPG is a usually a lot better at compressing the relatively complex pictures that we're working with in this case. PNG is ideal and very good at compressing pictures with large areas of consisting one/few colours, such as vector art or pictures with simple/transparent backgrounds, not high-resolution pictures of planets.
