An aging Richelieu-class Valor, the Epinal saw heavy action in the Champagne and Lorraine systems against the Council during the Second Gallic War. During the Battle of New Paris, the already damaged Epinal was the first ship to stand down upon receiving authorization to surrender from the Grand Duchy of Burgundy.
Today, the Epinal is stationed outside Planet Metz in the Lorraine system, tasked with safeguarding Gallia's border with the Omicrons. There has been no official communication between Confederate Gallia and the Nation of Malta, and independent Outcast raiders have become a more and more common sight within Gallia. As a result, Battleship Epinal is presently considered one of the most important posts within the Confederal Defense Forces.
Following the invasion of Lorraine by Kusari, Epinal was faced with a difficult situation, with the Duchy capital to its back, there was considerable opposition to the move that the fleet knew it must take, retreat, and regroup. Even knowing it must retreat, the speed of the Kusari advance caught the fleet as it made its way to Burgundy, and the fighting, stretching from the planet all the way to the civilian bases at Planet Moselle, caused casualties on both sides and some collateral damage to the nearby bases. The withdrawal, despite being a relative success, has dented the morale of the fleet, which was forced to leave Planet Metz and the other Gallic residents in Lorraine to Kusari.
