The Charlemagne-class was designed in the 680s specifically for defense and support roles. Battleships of this class are capable of holding and maintaining large numbers of fighters, and are equipped with powerful point defense turrets, but lack powerful anti-capital ship armament. During military campaigns, Charlemagne battleships are used as rearguard of advancing forces and for guarding supply lines. They are also used for system defense purposes. While stationed within a system, Charlemagnes also serves as a base of operations for the local Navy patrols.
Battleship Arles is the flagship of the Provence defensive fleet which is tasked to defend Planet Marseille and surrounding systems from pirate attacks. It was laid down in Fourchambault in 713 A.G.S. and was commissioned into Royal Navy service in 714 A.G.S. . After participating in several operations against the Council in the Burgundy system, Arles was brought into Provence in 726 A.G.S. where it has been on duty ever since, with the exception of brief maintainance trips to its home shipyard.
