The first Corsair Cruiser, also known as the Praefect, was constructed at Tripoli Shipyard more than 100 years ago. In the recent decades more ships of this type were built to counter capital ships of Corsairs' enemies, mainly the Red Hessians. Known as the most powerful pirate cruiser in all Sirius sector, the Praefect is known for its reinforced hull, and reliable power array capable of supporting the most powerful cruiser weaponry.
History
The first and only Cruiser design to have been used by the Corsairs, the Praefect was first produced after necessary engine and core-reactor technologies were obtained from the Order shortly after the establishment of the Corsair-Order alliance. However, designs for the vessel may be much older.
The production of the Praefect Cruiser signalled the beginning of the warship age for the Corsairs, as previously, they had had no ships larger than a Gunboat due to technological limitations. Along with it's gigantic cousin, the Legate Class Dreadnought, the Praefect was produced in limited numbers at Tripoli Shipyard, and later, at other facilities in neighbouring systems.
Immediately hailed by commanders as a revolutionary weapon of war, the Praefect was primarily put to use defending territory from the rising tide of enemy capital ships, particularly from the BHG Core, following the end of the Nomad War of 800 A.S, and deployed to the Omega systems to defend against a handful of Red Hessian warships that had begun harassing Corsair bases in the region.
In 816 A.S a program of radical refits co-ordinated by engineers at Tripoli Shipyard brought the still young Praefect fleet closer to the cutting edge of battle technology. Thick outer hulls were replaced with thinner but stronger plating containing Tungsten-Carbide alloy. Along with enhanced manouvering thrusters, the Praefect Refit Class boasted a flatter, more slender profile that allowed commanders to more easily evade enemy fire. Today, all Cruisers in the Corsair fleet are considered members of the "Praefect Refit Class", all formidable opponents in battle.
