Saumur is a Battleship of the now obsolete Triomphant class. The ship was built in 626 AGS, but has seen little actual combat. Her last active combat service was in 707 AGS, guarding the Picardy system. When the Charlemagne class was built specifically for rearguard duties, it rendered the remaining Triomphant class ships obsolete. However, Saumur was still in near pristine condition, so the Gallic Royal Navy decided against scrapping the ship. Instead, it was refitted at Rambouilette to serve as a mobile academy and redeployed to the backwater core systems to train future generations of Royal Navy pilots.
When it was discovered that the Maine system was in danger of succumbing to a supernova, the Saumur was redeployed to oversee the evacuation operations. Having successfully completed that mission, the Triomphant was once again stationed in the Picardy system, watching over the sealed Jump Gate to Maine to prevent traffic from journeying to the doomed system. Many a fresh pilot in Royal Navy history have had the blockade of civilian traffic in the region of the Gate as their first flights throughout the last few decades.
The Saumur continued in her role as a flight academy until the invasion of Picardy in 741 AGS, when the Gallic Royal Navy was forced to promote the aged vessel to flagship of their quickly mustered Amiens-Planetary Defense Task Force. It, its novices and recruits, and hundreds of other second rate vessels, along with some patriot volunteers, are all that stand between the planet and the La Fierte battlegroup in Picardy.
