Ilmenau is a frigid arctic world with a dense atmosphere, orbiting far beyond the system's frost line. The atmospheric pressure at its surface is high enough to let carbon dioxide and ammonia become liquid by night, forming rivers and lakes of enormous size, slowly evaporating during the day into the upper atmosphere where it condenses into rain. Ilmenau's surface does not reach temperatures higher than -32°C in spite of the high concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Active geysers are constantly releasing more CO2 from within the planet's crust into the atmosphere. Deposits of hydrocarbons and metals are believed to be trapped in the permafrost, and future conflicts might make mining operations a necessity in order to keep the military's reserve fleet supplied during war.
