Childhood and teenage years
Gunther Schenck was born on August 12th 773 A.S. on planet Hamburg to his mother, Elsie Schenck, and father, Reginald Schenck. He was raised in a poor neighbourhood but managed to avoid the bad crowds and illegal activity in the area by relying on technology for his social interactions from an early age. He valued his education and realised what path life could take him on if he focused on school during his emersion in the student lifestyle of his teenage years. Unfortunately, the hormonal changes taking place in his body during this time meant that he was distracted by the suddenly noticed girls in his school. Eventually he fell in love with one, who then invited him to join the group she was also a part off. Gunther had now abandoned his technological dependancy and all of the ideas he had for his future by joining one of the crowds he had sworn to avoid when he was younger.
The main activity of this group was distributing Cardamine to the curious children of the area, with the backing of the supplier. Although she never mentioned it, she was obviously in league with the Outcasts. But no members of the loose group of teenagers dared to talk beyond the already established limit of information the supplier was willing to provide. Gunther never tried the Cardamine itself; he was smart enough to know what it would mean for him. He would spend all of his money on the drug until he ran out and was forced to steal to fuel his addiction. He had heard of it. And now he was helping it.
This continued for six months. The group would receive shipments on a two week basis, and they would distribute it in among the various schools in the area. Recruiting key social figures in schools to apply peer pressure on others was a key part of the operation. But their luck ran out, and the supplier (along with many of the teenagers involved in the group, who were meeting the supplier to discuss the next shipment) was arrested by the Rheinland Federal Police in a drug bust. Gunther was not present at the time of the bust, and due to the "no writting evidence" policy he was never found to be involved in the operation.
Now that the trance on his mind had been broken, he scrapped together what remained of his previous life. He had practically abandoned education when he became more involved in the group, when the young girls (and sometimes boys) would pleasure him for small quantities of Cardamine to feed their addictions. But he managed to salvage small remnants, and was able to complete most subjects with a pass.
Rheinwehr
He applied for the Rheinwehr in 794 A.S., at the age of twenty-one, and was accepted. He was viewed as in the normal mood of recruits that had not seen training before: "energetic and suicidal." Many times he failed simulation exercises. Not because the targets were not destroyed, but because he was never good enough to complete it the way he should, so went kamikaze. Eventually this mentality was drilled out of him and he improved his piloting and passed.
He was assigned to a squadron and worked for the next six years in relative happiness with his life.
Nomad War
This is the event which pushed Gunther away from the Rheinwehr, when his squadron was dispatched with the Bretonian invasion force. The destruction of the innocent trading ships was a step too far in Gunther's book, and he returned to Rheinland and resigned from his post. He knew nothing of the Nomad infestation, and believed that the Rheinwehr was actually that cruel. When he learned of the Nomads, he attempted to reapply to the Rheinwehr, but was rejected for being "untrustworthy".
Recruitment into the Bundschuh Party
For the next three years, Gunther lived off of his savings while he attempted to find a suitable job. During this time, he learned of the poor working conditions of many people. Long hours, low pay, so he just quit and tried to find work with a decent pay. But it was hard to come by. And now he was starting to feel the consequences of abandoning his education path all those years ago, as he did not meet the requirements for any of the jobs that he was remotely interested in. When his choices were narrowed down to rubbish collector or sewage collector, he began to contemplate suicide. It wouldn't be so hard. Just overcome the urge to live for a few seconds and he could end it all. He did not believe in any afterlife, so he believed it would be the final rest for him.
Then he went to a rally. He decided that he should at least try some things before killing himself, and going to a secret workers rally could inspire him to live. And it did. He was told that workers all over Rheinland were being treated unfairly, with low pay, long hours and no unions. Those sorts of conditions, Gunther thought, would relate more to an old Earth eighteenth century factory rather than a super-modern society. The speaker convinced him that there was a fight worth fighting for. And Gunther could fight for that fight if he wanted to. He had combat training, he had the determination, he had the attitude.
So when the speaker asked him if he would fight for his homeland and for what was fair for those who lived in his homeland, it's hardly surprising that he said he would.
