Saumur is a Battleship of the now obsolete Triomphant class. The ship was built in 626 A.G.S., but has seen little actual combat. Her last active combat service was in 707 A.G.S., guarding the Picardy system. When the Charlemagne class was built specifically for rearguard duties, it rendered the remaining Triomphant class ships obsolete. However, Saumur was still in near pristine condition, so the Gallic Navy decided against scrapping the ship. Instead, it was refitted at Rambouilette to serve as a mobile academy and redeployed to the backwater core systems to train future generations of Royal Navy pilots.
When it was discovered that the Maine system was in danger of succumbing to a supernova, the Saumur was redeployed to that system to oversee the evacuation operations. Having successfully completed that mission, the Valor is stationed once again in the Picardy system, watching over the sealed Jump Gate to Maine to prevent traffic from journeying to the doomed system. The Saumur continues in her role as a flight academy, however, and many a new pilot find their first patrols to be in support of the blockade until 781 AGS (825 AS).
In response to the Councils sudden invasion of Picardy, the Saumur has taken up a defense position near Planet Conty where it launches unending amounts of counter-operations in a defiant attempt to negate Council advances into the system. The mobile academy retains its reputation of producing excellent naval pilots, and its ceaseless operations have only built upon that prestige.
