Le Mans was the sixth planet colonized by humans in Gallic space. It was discovered as early as 90 AGS when the Maine system was charted. The climate was deemed too cold to suit future colonists. As the climate on the planet was studied in more detail, it was discovered that equatorial regions of the planet would provide perfect living conditions if a small climate adjustment was to take place. From 200 to 300 AGS, efforts to raise the temperature were made, and in 330 AGS the first permanent settlements were founded planetside.
Le Mans is still a cold world compared to other Gallic planets, and its society is solitary compared to other Gallic Core World planets. Those who lived on Le Mans for generations don't easily adapt to warmer climates found on other planets. Strangely, it does not work vice versa, and new colonists adapt to Le Mans conditions with relative ease.
Despite the temperatures, Le Mans is remarkable for its rich wildlife. Warm-blooded life is abundant, and most of the planet is covered with forests, vegetation types varying between different sub climates.
Most of planet's population is concentrated in a few urban centers in the equatorial parts of the planet. Early in the planet's history, its economy was largely centered around resource processing. Multiple mining facilities in Maine and Normandy provided Le Mans' industry with everything it needed. The First Gallic War put a halt on Le Mans' further economic development. The planet was converted into a huge military outpost, serving as the last line of Royal defense, as well as a primary base for Royal Navy ships engaged in battles. Some of the early battles of the war took place not far from the planet and even in its orbit. Later the battles moved towards Normandy. After the war, Le Mans' development was compromised due to safety concerns. Commercial activities moved from Maine and surrounding systems into the Gallic Border Worlds. Le Mans and Mayenne both faced population declines and economic recessions that government investments were unable to counter. However, towards 600 AGS the planet shifted to high-tech industries, with smaller companies moving from New Paris to get cheaper housing and labor. The situation on the Normandy border remained calm, and miners returned to Maine as well, with some of the older heavy industries being restored to full power. The combination of technological innovation and industrial efficiency has led to Le Mans steel and other metal alloys being considered the finest in Gallia. As of now, the planet is number five among Gallic planets by its population, with a stable and growing population.
