The Battleship Nagumo is the only Meiji-class battleship to remain in service this day. Constructed in 723 A.S., it was designed as part of Kusari's emphasis on centralization and self-preservation known as Sakoku, functioning as a strategically placed deterrent against any hostile intrusion coming from the neighbouring Tau systems. Whilst it could be treated as a historical monument because of its uniqueness, the Kusari government have chosen not to promote the battleship in this way, as to them it is seen as a failure.

The majority of Meiji-class battleships were decommissioned after rumours of a serious structural flaw on stabilizing fins and the suicide of Yasuhiro Takeshi, one of Samura's engineers who had overseen the project. Whilst the rumours remained unconfirmed, the Emperor demanded that all Meiji-class battleships be pulled from service in order to restore the honour of Kusari's Naval Forces as well as the Kusari citizens' faith in them.

The Nagumo was the last Meiji-class battleship scheduled to be decommissioned and be replaced by the new Bakumatsu-class Battleships that were being produced by Samura, as its militarily vital position in Kusari was one of great importance and as such the Nagumo could not be moved until another battleship was constructed. However, when it came to constructing the replacement battleship for the Nagumo the Kusari government was running low on funding and a decision was made to upgrade the battleships scanner systems and armour as well as to reinforce the stabilizing fins with extra support structures.

Over time its mandate has grown from Sakoku-based principles, to the prevention of the trafficking of cardamine from the Tau systems by Golden Chrysanthemums, protecting Nansei Research Station from attacks by the Blood Dragons and to maintain Kusari law in Kyushu. Currently, with the Tau war continuing, its mandate was rewritten to include the protection of Kusari systems against Bretonia's Armed Forces. The Nagumo also serves as the command centre for Taisho Hikaru Sulu as well as the battle groups under his command.
