South Shields Refinery is a huge manufacturing complex orbiting the planet Hartlepool. The Independent Miners Guild was the first to discover the Newcastle system, in mid 588 A.S., and constructed South Shields in 590 A.S., when Bretonian corporations were only just starting to explore Newcastle and evaluate its resources. The refinery mainly purifies water and oxygen from the nearby Galloway Ice Cloud, but it also manufactures a small amount of Deuterium and H-Fuel, using resources mined from the atmosphere of Hartlepool.

The BMM has been lobbying to drive the independent miners out of the refinery for many years now, but without much success. The Bretonian Government initially refused due to the BMM already having caused the uprising in Dublin that resulted in the formation of the Molly movement, and these days it argues that South Shields makes a good "hostage" to blackmail the IMG with in case the miners openly support Kusari during the war, although many believe it is unlikely the IMG will do so.

Because of the pressure that the Bretonia Armed Forces, alongside with the BMM inflicted upon the dwellers of the station, the station's population decreased significantly.

The station is currently considered to be abandoned. Since their position in Bretonia is contested by the war.
