The Tarrafal started life as an experiment by the Zoners of Bethlehem, where it served as a mobile mining platform in the Helium fields of Pennsylvania. Fielding a fleet of mining ships, it served as a drop off and collection point for the extracted gas. After Bering quietly fell to Pirates and other unlawfuls, with the Freeport abandoned to the new owners of the system, Bethlehem experienced an influx of refugees seeking to rebuild their lives on the nearest Zoner station to their former home.

However, after having lived for so long without the oversight of house law, the newly arrived inhabitants of Bethlehem soon began to chafe under the restrictions of Liberty law. When a mining ship collided with the Tarrafal, forcing it to return to Bethlehem for repairs, a sect of the Freeport 2 Zoners entered negotiations with the owners to purchase the carrier.

Lasting several months, the negotiations finally resulted in the full purchase of the Tarrafal for the Zoners who wished to reclaim Freeport 2. Mining ships and transports were replaced with Fighters and other ships designed for combat. Setting off for the edges of the Tanner field in Bering, the Tarrafal, once a platform of business, now carries the displaced Zoners who wish to reclaim their former home - by force if need be.
