The 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (also known as "Combat Application Group" and "Delta"), initially formed in the late 20th century and re-formed again in 689 AS, is a Special Operations Forces division made up from the most distinguished and skilled personnel from all of Liberty's military branches. Highly trained and efficient and equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry, Delta operators conduct various asymmetric warfare operations in order to enforce Libertonian interests, on the ground as well as in space. Delta formally belongs to the Liberty Army, but they only answer to LSOCOM, the Department of Defense and the President himself, and are given a degree of freedom in their operations unthinkable of in any other unit.
Delta's objectives include, but are not limited to, counterterrorism operations against both foreign and domestic groups, dealing with hostage situations, protecting high-level VIPs, forward reconnaissance, deep space intelligence gathering, raids, covert operations and surgical strikes of all kinds as well as assisting LSF Paramilitary Officers on their missions. They are also known to be among the first units on the ground during a planetary assault, securing critical locations like communication posts and command centers.
What Delta is not is a police force. While low-level criminal activity is something the military does not tolerate, SOF units have other tasks to do than fighting Rogues, Outcasts and petty smugglers.

Ranks
The 1st does not directly recruit civilians into their ranks. All 1st operators have served in the Liberty Army (or, in some exceptional cases, the Navy) and reached at least the rank of Sergeant or First Lieutenant (Second Lieutenants serving in the 1st are exclusively former enlisted soldiers who attended officer school).
Non-commissioned officers
NCOs are specialized officers while commissioned officers are generalized officers. In Delta, NCOs usually serve in combat roles as grunts as well as tactical commanders; some senior NCOs may also be in command of gunboats, tanks or other crewed vehicles.
- E-5 Sergeant
- E-6 Staff Sergeant
- E-7 Sergeant First Class
- WO-1 Warrant Officer
- CWO-* Chief Warrant Officer
Commissioned officers
Commissioned officers are generalized officers who earned their ranks either through ROTC or graduation from either West Point Military Academy or officer school. They usually serve as tactical as well as strategical commanders.
- O-1 Second Lieutenant
- O-2 First Lieutenant
- O-3 Captain
- O-4 Major
- O-5 Lieutenant Colonel
Lieutenant Colonel is the highest rank in which an operator may serve in field positions, although they also take part in strategic planning. Higher ranking officers usually serve as warship commanders or in purely strategic positions.

Capital ships
The 1st only operates two capital ships - the LCSV Independence, a heavily customized Liberty Assault Carrier acting as mobile FOB in wartimes, and the LCSA Ft. Louisburg, a Freedom-Class Assault Battlecruiser primarily used for defensive operations in Liberty space and as a listening post. No further capital ships will be commissioned into Delta. Both vessels have planetary assault capabilities.
