Chateauroux was once considered a candidate for terraforming that would at some point allow the planet to be colonized permanently. The rocky lifeless world, however, was not an easy terraforming operation. The lack of easily accessible water and extremely high equatorial temperatures, while not making the world impossible to terraform, did increase the amount of off-world resources needed to initiate the procedure. The government and corporations engaged in a lengthy disaggreement over the planning and funding of Chateauroux's terraforming, but eventually corporate opinions prevailed. In 651 AGS, Gallic Metal Service founded its first mining operation on Chateauroux, and other companies followed shortly afterwards.

Chateauroux produces a number of ores, but is most well known as a significant source of Deuterium, which is abundant in the planet's oceans. The Second Gallic War made this planet far more important for the Gallic Royal Navy's strategic plans. The loss of Marne and general instability in the Border Worlds made Berry one of the places where resources for the future assault against Sirius were most easily obtainable. For the last few years, the population of Chateauroux has grown by more than 20 percent each year, reaching 400,000 in 734 AGS.
