The Battleship Wessex was originally stationed near the Sunderland Research Station when it was first being built, but after many years it was decided that the Battleship was unnecessary as the alien ruins were completely lifeless. Shortly after the Nomad War, however, it was decided to station the newly commissioned Grimsby nearby to reassure the public.

Many of the scientists initially objected to having a heavily armed battleship keeping watch over Sunderland, but in recent times strange raids by unidentified hostile ships has persuaded a lot of the protestors to accept the military guard force as a neccesity.
