Discovered in 769 A.S. by a Zoner expedition, Planet Gran Canaria became their new hope for a peaceful life on a hospitable world far from House territory. Hailed as a paradise world among the barren and lifeless rocks so common in the Edge Worlds, the Zoners quickly took advantage of their discovery, sending a large surveying and colonization team to the Omega-49 system, hoping to establish themselves there before other groups arrived in-system.

In 772 A.S., a jump hole to Dublin was discovered in the Barrier Nebula outcropping in the system. The Zoners realized that if the Bretonian government found out about the system, they would try to annex it and bring in Bretonian settlers, considering the crowding on Bretonian planets and the desirability of a planet like Gran Canaria. In addition, the Mollys in Dublin would also be a threat to the Zoners' new home.

In 803 A.S. the Zoners, realising that Bretonia will eventually stumble on the system during their endless skirmishes with the Mollys, made a strategic decision to sell secret routes into Omega-49 to the Corsairs, in exchange for enough money and resources to continue building up the planet. Under this agreement, the Zoners also secured their bases that were in Corsair territory, such as Freeport 9, and the Corsairs gained an alternate route to strike Bretonia and the Mollys from where they least expected it.

Nowadays, more Corsair Refugees are settling on Planet Gran Canaria, as well as various settlers, social outcasts and wanderers from all over Sirius who prefer their feet on a planet instead of the deck of a ship or a Freeport. The planet's population has correspondingly risen dramatically since it was first colonised, and there are known to be at least 420 million people living on the planet as of early 817 A.S. The relationship between the Zoners and Corsairs on the planet is largely cordial, but both groups are still wary of each other, mirroring the wider diplomatic situation between the two powers, especially since the Red Hessians, bounty hunters and even Bretonian scouts have landed on the planet in recent years.
