Koeln is one of the most recently claimed systems of Rheinland that until recently has been fairly unheard of by most. Originally discovered by Daumann Heavy Construction in 750 A.S., Koeln was first inhabited by Rheinland government officials with the construction of Heisenberg Research Station who shortly after took an intrigue in the scientific value of the location. The system was later deemed an appropriate out of the way location for Kruger Minerals and ALG Waste Disposal to build their latest joint project Wuppertal Refinery.

A while after the abandoning of operations aboard Heisenberg Research Station by Rheinland officials, a number of Freelance civilians were believed to have claimed the station. Since then there has been an increase in unlawful operations which spurred the construction of Olpe Border Station to safegaurd civilian operatons and transit within the system. But despite police efforts to maintain order in Koeln, the system continues to have a rising presence of piracy and unlawful activism to this day.

Planetary Bodies

Planet Steinfurt

Planet Steinfurt
Steinfurt is a major planet in the Koeln system, orbitting closely to the system's young sun. Originally surveyed by a Daumann prospecting expedition in late 750 A.S., the planet has been marked by the company as "scarce in mineable resources". Additional data compiled by automated probes revealed that the system itself was frequented by a large number of comets and orbitting dwarf planets, which were confirmed to regularly hit Steinfurt owing to its large gravitational force. The planet was thus deemed hazardous and uninhabitable and the expedition turned to the asteroid fields on the fringes of the system.
The planet was largely forgotten until late 803, when Kruger Minerals, desperate for new mining grounds, began their own surveys within Koeln. Unlike the preceding Daumann surveyors, the Kruger expedition focused on the planet itself and eventually discovered that the frequent collisions with the planet surface had launched large amounts of metals in large chunks of rock from the planet's surface into its orbit, where the chunks decayed into extensive rings of debris. ALG soon agreed to finance a resource gathering and processing project in return for a share of the profits from the enterprise and planet Steinfurt was soon the first planetary body in Sirius to be mined without the need for atmospheric entry.

Herne Moon

Please upload an image of this planet.
Herne is planet Steinfurt's only natural satellite, locked with it in a close orbit. Its relatively quick orbital period of 18 standard days allows it to escape most of the comets and planetoids that wander into a collision course with Steinfurt on a regular basis. The moon itself is composed mostly of volcanic rock and a modest amount of helium and hydrogen gas, thus holding little to no value for commercial extraction.

Wildspitzefeld is an asteroid field that bears the marks of a Daumann strip mining operation.
Location: G/5

Norddrauwolke

Please upload an image of this field.
Norddrauwolke has long been a staging ground for a number of unlawful groups in the area who take advantage of the chaotic storms and tidal eddies to mask their congregations. Virtually impossible to patrol in any meaningful way, lawful patrols and traders alike can only await the surges of electromagnetic storms that mark the migration of pirate fleets.

Space Stations

Wuppertal Refinery

Wuppertal Refinery
Wuppertal Refinery is a jointly operated ALG - Kruger station within the Koeln system, dedicated to the smelting and processing of the different metals mined by Kruger or recovered by ALG operations Sirius wide. Originally established in 804 A.S., the base was built and equipped using ALG funds in the midst of Kruger's large financial problems as a perfect solution, owing to the resource rich planetary debris orbitting planet Steinfurt. As the talks of the merger of the two companies took place, Wuppertal was the first station onboard which ALG and Kruger staff worked in unison, sharing their experience to mount steady competition against Daumann's monopoly.
Presently, the station is establishing substantial refining capacity in order to exploit nearby metal ore resources for high temperature alloy manufacturing. Despite its position around Steinfurt, orbital mining has not yet commenced, though preparations are under way to allow the refinery to accomodate metals mined from the planet's orbit. While the mining and refining operations are in development, ALG has temporarily established a side operation that manufactures newly developed and highly specialised hazardous material containers for toxic waste storage. Long term plans aim for the relocation of HazMat Container production to Dortmund Station, but this requires extensive retrofitting of the station in order to handle precision manufacturing. In the meantime, Wuppertal Refinery has been able to begin turning a profit due to HazMat Containers sales much earlier than ALG's refining plans had expected. The additional capital is being invested in mining and refinery capabilities that ALG and Kruger intend to use to threaten Daumann's current strategic advantage in Sirius' high temperature alloys market. While it is unlikely that Daumann will be able to respond adequately in the marketplace to counter this threat to its manufacturing market share, ALG and Kruger executives are bracing themselves for political battles that Daumann might initiate against them as a last resort.

Heisenberg Research Station

Heisenberg Research Station
The Heisenberg Research Station was originally founded in 761 A.S. as a Rheinland government owned observatory and laboratory dedicated to the study of planetary body movements within the resource rich fringes of the Walker Nebula, as well as to record the orbital phenomenons around planet Steinfurt. A minor research station, it remained crewed by a small number of scientists for the next 6 years until the Rheinland government faced yet another wave of overbearing financial cuts and had decided to abandon the station. Powered down and abandoned for the next 50 years, Heisenberg fell into steady disrepair before eventually being repressurised by a group of squatters following the chaos of the Nomad War.
With most of its research equipment still intact and the stabilisation of a number of surrounding jump holes the station quickly found itself in the middle of many fringe trade and smuggling routes. Frequented regularly by passing explorers and adventurers, Heisenberg became something of a small freeport, while at the same time attracting many astronomers and astrophysicists from all across Sirius with its scientific equipment, and gaining a reputation of being a politically neutral place for great minds of science to converge and discuss their findings.

Cruiser Schwarzwald

Cruiser Schwarzwald
The RHC Schwarzwald is a retired Red Hessian cruiser, transferred over to the rising LWB in response to the discovery of the Stuttgart and Hamburg jump holes within the Koeln system. Retaining only a small regular cadre of Hessian engineers for conservation purposes, the ship is commanded by an LWB captain and command crew, and is primarily used as a mobile supply depot, raid stash and fire base within the Norddrauwolke, being a fallback point for raiding activities both within Hamburg and Koeln itself. Heavily frequented by Hessian, Unioner and LWB patrols, it is considered as an important base on the way into Hamburg, and an important checkpoint for most, if not all diamond smugglers on their way into Liberty.

Olpe Border Station

Olpe Border Station
Olpe Border Station is a command centre for Rheinland's Federal Police services within the developing Koeln system. Its main task is to safeguard cargo convoys on their way to and from the Wuppertal Refinery from the numerous pirates and raiders that are known to operate in the system.

Krefeld Base

Krefeld Base
Krefeld is a small Unioner controlled base within one of the many asteroid fields in the Koeln system. The base serves mainly as a guard point for the nearby Duesseldorf jump hole, with the majority of its traffic consisting of diamond smugglers and supply ships. Placed well on the outskirts of the system, Krefeld is regarded as a safe haven from lawful activity, and is an important place of contact between Unioners and Red Hessians in Rheinland, right after Kreuzberg Depot in New Berlin.

Aluminium Ore
Aluminium is a silvery white, ductile metal classed in the boron family of chemical elements. Because aluminium is very chemically reactive, on planets it may only be commonly found combined with any of over 270 other minerals. In space, where Aluminium is formed by the action of gamma rays on lighter atomic elements, the metal may be found in its pure elemental form. Aluminium is very resistant to corrosion and possesses a low density, is nonmagnetic and nonsparking, and is a good thermal and electrical conductor. Aluminium is extremely important in the composition of various alloys essential to transportation, construction, and aerospace applications.
