The Charlemagne class warship was designed in the 680s specifically for defensive and support purposes. Battleships of this class are capable of holding and maintaining large numbers of fighters and are equipped with powerful point defense turrets, yet lack powerful anti-capital ship armament. During military campaigns, Charlemagne battleships are used as the rearguard for advancing forces and for guarding supply lines. They are also used for system defense purposes. While stationed within a system, a Charlemagne also serves as a base of operations for the local Navy patrols.
Battleship Le Cendre's last assignment was patrol duty in the vicinity of the stable Jump Hole between Provence and Ile-de-France. Construction of the Jump Gate was scheduled to happen eleven years earlier, but the war and criminal activity postponed construction efforts, forcing the Gallic Royal Navy to deploy the battleship to that location.
Now positioned around the Southampton Shipyard Trade Lane intersection, Le Cendre is part of the "Southampton Trinité", comprised of the Battleships Le Cendre, Beuvray and Ambazac. Military analysts fiercely debated the intelligence of withdrawing so many forces from the Gallic Core Worlds, but their warnings fell on deaf ears as the Crown pushed for a decisive end to the war.
